Phil Parkinson praises ‘unlucky’ Wrexham player ahead of Reading return, he deserves credit

Wrexham are back on the road once again on Tuesday night, travelling to take on Reading in a crucial League One clash.

Wrexham’s 1-0 win over Rotherham United on Saturday afternoon took Phil Parkinson’s side level on points with Wycombe Wanderers.

It’s natural to look ahead and already start thinking about this weekend’s clash with Wycombe given its importance in the League One promotion race.

Wycombe boss Mike Dodds is already thinking about Wrexham, but the Chairboys don’t have a midweek game to think about – unlike Wrexham.

Parkinson must keep his eyes fully focused on Reading as Wrexham make the trip to Berkshire on Tuesday night.

Reading can certainly cause problems for Wrexham and one familiar face to Royals fans could be in action.

Phil Parkinson on Wrexham’s George Evans

Parkinson will be considering ways to freshen up his side to cope with Wrexham’s busy schedule.

Matty James was hailed by Parkinson after Saturday’s win over Rotherham but this may be a chance to take him out and allow him to rest a little before facing Wycombe.

George Dobson has picked up a knock, so that could pave the way for George Evans to face his former club.

Evans has only started one League One game this season with injuries hampering him this term.

The 30-year-old came off the bench against Rotherham on Saturday though, putting himself in contention against Reading.

Evans spent two years with Reading between 2016 and 2018, making 71 appearances for the club.

Parkinson has now told The Leader that he was pleased to give Evans some playing time against Rotherham.

Parkinson feels that Evans deserves credit for getting back fit again having been ‘unlucky’ with injuries, praising him for working hard in his recovery.

“We’ve got George as well and you’ve got to give him credit because he’s been unlucky this season,” said Parkinson.

“He got back in the team and then got a bad injury against Stevenage. He’s worked hard and I was pleased to get George on the pitch,” he added.

Wrexham trio set for Reading return

Evans will be making a return to Reading either as a starter or as a substitute, and he’s not alone in making that return.

Boss Parkinson was a Reading hero in his playing days and is bound to receive a great reception upon his return on Tuesday.

Then there is striker Sam Smith.

Reading begrudgingly sold Smith to Wrexham in January, believing that the seven-figure fee was just too good to turn down.

Smith said an emotional goodbye to Reading in January but will now be looking to take them down with Wrexham as the League One promotion charge continues.
