Phil Parkinson reveals what he ‘really’ wants from Wrexham players vs Blackpool after promotion blow

Wrexham were held to a 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers on Good Friday, dropping outside of the top two as a result.

Wrexham fans were furious with Phil Parkinson during the clash despite praising the manager shortly before kick-off.

The Red Dragons picked an attack-minded side on the day, but it still wasn’t enough to come away with the three points.

Wrexham drew with Bristol Rovers after Matty James scored a late equaliser to rescue what could prove to be a major point.

Jay Rodriguez earned criticism from fans yet again, though there were one or two bright sparks, including Elliot Lee.

Following the match, Parkinson did not speak to the club’s media shortly afterwards, as he normally does.

But he did eventually hold his post-match press conference later on and had a lot to say.

Phil Parkinson wants Wrexham players to be positive vs Blackpool

After Bristol Rovers, Wrexham are next in action on Bank Holiday Monday, taking on Blackpool.

They have turned their form around in recent months and began Friday sat 10th in the division.

It’s going to be another tough test but speaking post-match, Parkinson said he wants his players to be ‘really positive’ on April 21.

He said: “It’s not a lack of effort. Maybe the expectancy weighed heavily on us today.

“But we’ve got to take that off our shoulders, we really have, and we’ve got to go and just play and just go to Blackpool and be really positive in everything we do.

“And, just of course, just this disappointed we didn’t get all three points.”

Phil Parkinson on Bristol Rovers’ goal

It was surprising to see Wrexham fall behind, especially at the Racecourse Ground.

The Red Dragons have one of the best defensive records in the division so conceding against a team with six defeats in a row before this week came as a shock.

On the Bristol Rovers goal, Parkinson said: “I thought first 30 minutes we were OK, we had decent control without producing in the final third. The goal, all goals from set plays are soft, and that one was from our point of view.

“After that, there weren’t enough players to grab hold of the game and be the man to inspire us back into it and I just felt we went into our shells a little bit as a team.

“The second half was better, we got back into it, but still we didn’t feel we produced anywhere near enough quality today to go and win the game. Obviously it’s disappointing to only take a point.”
