Wrexham have made big changes to their squad this summer, and one player told to leave has spoken out.

The Welsh outfit began their rebuild ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season by releasing eight senior players.

Further exits at the Racecourse Ground have followed, with several permanent and loan moves sanctioned.

Paul Mullin has joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan move from Wrexham after losing his place in 2024/25.

Elsewhere, Will Boyle, Luke McNicholas and Luke Bolton have all been sold to other clubs, and one player has now spoken on his exit.

Former Wrexham player on being told to leave

Bolton was linked with Mansfield Town last week, having hardly featured across 2024/25.

The right-wing-back did not play in League One and had injury issues.

And it was recently confirmed by Wrexham that Bolton had signed for Mansfield permanently.

The player, speaking to his new club’s media, has now said that he was told he could leave Wrexham in the summer transfer window.

He said: “In the summer was told I’m free to find a new club really. So I know my agent and Simon were speaking, and once I heard the interest, really wanted to get it done, took a bit longer than I would have liked, but over the line now.

Bolton was then asked: “Was that a surprise to you, for you to be told that you were allowed to leave because you were well thought of in Wrexham?”

He responded by saying there are no hard feelings with any of the management team at Wrexham.

Bolton continued: “If I’m honest, no. I think as a footballer you can see things coming and there’s no hard feelings to Wrexham or any of the management staff. I just didn’t really play too much, and to be fair, it’s credit to the lads who were in front of me. They played well, picked up a few injuries, so that didn’t help either.

“But new chapter now, but no hard feelings with anyone from Wrexham that’s for sure.

More Wrexham players expected to leave

Bolton’s exit means 12 players have now left North Wales since the close of the 2024/25 season.

However, Wrexham are being impacted by EFL rules and will need to move on at least another five players this summer.

The Championship squad rules are set at a 25-man limit for players 21 or above.

And after making six new signings, Wrexham now have 30 players that need to be registered, meaning five must go or be left out of the team.
