Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have taken Wrexham from obscurity to one of the hottest names in world football.

With the new season of Welcome to Wrexham now just a month away, fans will be given an even deeper look into the way the club continues to grow under their new owners.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took the reins at the Racecourse Ground in February 2021.

There was likely skepticism from fans at the time, given the pair had never shown any public interest in football until shortly before buying Wrexham.

But any doubts that surrounded the duo will have quickly dissipated when it became clear just how good they were for the club and town.

McElhenney and Reynolds ignored a warning about signing Paul Mullin, and he, along with a number of other new arrivals, have helped Wrexham reach dizzying new heights.

Wrexham set for best finish in 42 years

Wrexham posted a record turnover in the 2023/24 season, which was believed to be the highest of any side competing in League Two ever.

In the current campaign, meanwhile, the Red Dragons are looking to become the first side in English professional football to win three promotions in a row.

Wrexham are battling with Wycombe Wanderers for second place in the third tier, but even if they don’t get it, they have already guaranteed history.

Ahead of their fixture against Bristol Rovers on Friday, April 18, the Welsh outfit are already set to finish at least fifth in League One.

This will be their highest league placing since 1982, when they finished 21st in the old Second Division, which then became the First Division and is now known as the Championship.

In comparison, the last and only time Wrexham previously played in League One was in 2004/05 when they ended up 22nd.

What is Wrexham’s highest-ever league finish

Wrexham have never made it into the top tier of English football, but have had a couple of seasons in the second tier.

Their highest-ever league finish came in 1978/79 when they managed to end up 15th in what is now classed as the Championship.

However, as McElhenney wants Wrexham in the Premier League at some point during his stint as co-owner, that could easily change in the very near future.

He even told Prince William last year that he wants the club to become champions of England someday.

The actor said: “Our ultimate goal is to build a sustainable model that will allow us to not only get to the Premier League, but sustain in the Premier League and eventually win the Premier League and be in the Champions League.”
