Sky Sports pundit picks out one Wrexham fixture that will be crucial to League One promotion race

Wrexham continue to defy expectations and find themselves in a promotion battle in League One this season, but one game could change their fate completely.

After gaining back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two over the last two years, few had believed Wrexham could compete at the top again this season.

However, Phil Parkinson’s side are currently third in League One, just two points off top of the table Birmingham City.

While there are things Wrexham need to solve if they want to make it to the Championship, there is a very real possibility we could see a third-successive promotion this year, but an impending fixture could be crucial to that dream.

Huddersfield vs Wrexham will be huge for promotion battle

Sky Sports pundit, Don Goodman, has been assessing the situation at the top of League One, and suggested that Huddersfield are now very much a team to watch in the race for the promotion places.

Goodman said (via Dom Howson on Twitter/X): “Huddersfield have got to play both Wycombe and Wrexham at home, which means they’re very much still in the automatic promotion race. They’ve put such a good run together that Wycombe and Wrexham must be concerned. It’s all to play for.”

Just this week, Wycombe’s defeat to Huddersfield opened the promotion battle up even more, and there is no denying we now have a four-horse race.

Wrexham travel to Huddersfield on March 4 in what could end up being a real six-pointer, before playing away at Wycombe 11 days later. They also still have to host Birmingham at the end of this month.

Could Wrexham’s away form cost them promotion?

While Wrexham remain unbeaten at the Racecourse Ground this season, it is their away form that has been a real concern.

Indeed, a team like Birmingham have a real advantage over Wrexham in that respect, with the Blues being just as effective away from home as the are at St. Andrews.

Parkinson and his men will have to fix that issue quickly, or those away trips to Huddersfield and Wycombe could end up killing their promotion dreams.

However, if they can get results there, then you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone that would bet against the Red Dragons clinching one of the top two spots in League One come the end of the season.
