Wrexham secured a huge 1-0 win over Rotherham United on Saturday as the race for automatic promotion heats up.

The Red Dragons were aiming to pick up their first victory at the Racecourse Ground in five attempts in all competitions when they kicked off at 3pm.

And while it wasn’t a pretty start to the game, Wrexham did beat Rotherham United 1-0, boosting their promotion chances massively.

Sam Smith scored the only goal of the game, being assisted by Jay Rodriguez after questions from fans over the latter’s inclusion in the starting eleven.

Wrexham held on for the remainder of the second half to pick up three points and, in turn, move level with second place Wycombe Wanderers.

The Chairboys drew 1-1 with Peterborough United in another 3pm kick-off but Darren Ferguson’s side probably should have won after wasting a major chance in injury time to make it 2-1.

Why Ollie Rathbone was taken off for Wrexham vs Rotherham United

Regardless, Wrexham are now on the same number of points as Wycombe going into what will be a giant clash between the pair in seven days’ time.

The only negative coming out of Saturday was the fact star man Ollie Rathbone appeared to have a problem when we was subbed off after 71 minutes.

Rathbone has been brilliant for Wrexham in recent weeks, and losing him to injury would be a major blow.

However, Phil Parkinson confirmed post-match that the former Rotherham man simply had cramp, and he didn’t want to take any risks.

He also stated that George Dobson could be back in time to feature versus Reading this coming Tuesday.

George Evans needs to step up for Wrexham

If it indeed just cramp, it looks as though Rathbone and Dobson will both be in contention for the upcoming midweek fixture.

However, Andy Cannon is out long-term, meaning even with the above duo fit, Parkinson is light in midfield.

In turn, George Evans made his League One return on Saturday, coming off the bench for the final 29 minutes of normal time to replace Rathbone.

Evans performed fairly well but now Wrexham are playing two games most weeks, he will need to be at his best in every match he features in going forward despite having very limited game time -105 League One minutes – before this week.
