Wrexham returned to the English Football League back in 2023, earning the first of three-straight promotions under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

Wrexham’s promotion from the National League might be their most memorable yet. It was their first promotion under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac and the start of this incredible journey.

The Dragons won the league in what was their 15th consecutive season playing in the National League, amassing a staggering 111 points ahead of Notts County in 2nd on 107.

Wrexham beat Boreham Wood to seal promotion that season. Fast-forward two years and Phil Parkinson is trying to make it work in the Championship.

Going into the international break, Wrexham drew 1-1 with Birmingham City to find themselves in 18th place of the Championship table, albeit having lost only one of their last eight in all competitions.

Three Wrexham promotion heroes now without a club

As Wrexham keep on moving up the ladder, players keep on being left behind, or pushed out into the cold like Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer last season, with both playing elsewhere now.

And there’s others, one such name being Eoghan O’Connell who is another player who helped Wrexham win promotion all the way from non-league to the Championship. Wrexham released O’Connell at the end of the summer transfer window and he remains without a club.

Another name from that 2022/23 season who’s now a free agent is Anthony Forde. Forde left Wrexham back in February of this year, joining Burton Albion but eventually leaving them as a free agent in the summer, and he remains without a club to this day, despite only being 31 years old.

The last player from that 2022/23 season who’s still active, but without a club, is goalkeeper Rob Lainton. The 35-year-old made a staggering 133 career appearances for the Dragons, the vast majority of which in the National League.

He spent time with Altrincham earlier this year but is currently a free agent.
