Paul Mullin is currently on loan at Wigan Athletic from Wrexham, remaining in League One after the Dragons earned promotion to the Championship.

Wrexham fans still have a keen eye on Paul Mullin and how he’s faring in his loan spell away from the club, having joined Wigan Athletic during the summer.

The 30-year-old striker fell well out of favour under Phil Parkinson who oversaw another exodus of first-team players this summer, as well as an influx of new players arriving at the Racecourse.

Club legends Mullin and Ollie Palmer departed. So too did other long-serving former players like Eoghan O’Connell who was released by Wrexham at the end of the summer transfer window.

Paul Mullin’s Wigan Athletic set for League One showdown

League One is a very competitive league, as Wrexham and Parkinson found out last season. There were a number of teams going for promotion and it went right down to the wire with Wrexham facing late competition from both Charlton Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers.

And at one point towards the end of the season, it looked like Wrexham and Wycombe who were the two front-runners for 2nd. In fact, Wycombe almost cost Wrexham promotion from League One last time round, owing to a certain EFL rule.

The EFL states that when two teams finish on the same goal difference then the team who scores the most goals across the season finishes ahead of the other. With two games left to play last season, Wycombe and Wrexham were level on points and on goal difference too.

But Wycombe bottled it with defeat against Leyton Orient, losing in the play-offs too. This weekend, they face Mullin’s Wigan Athletic away from home.

Is Paul Mullin set for an unexpected return to Wrexham?

Mullin has steadily been getting back to his best. He was rested in midweek and only started one of the last three before that, having not scored since mid-September either.

But four goals in 14 games in all competitions this season is already an improvement on last season. Now with Wrexham’s strikers looking like they’re carrying a few knocks, Parkinson might have no choice but to bring Mullin back in January.

Wrexham can recall Mullin in January but it’s highly likely that, if the club do need more attackers in January, then they’ll just go out and buy some, or sign some on loan instead.

Mullin’s time at Wrexham certainly looks to be over. But if he can impress with Wigan this season then he could secure an exciting move next summer.
