Wrexham have not been in great form this season, but two of their former players are now part of promotion-chasing sides.

Owing to their historic rise from the National League to the Championship, the Red Dragons have had to consistently make big changes to their squad.

In the summer of 2025 alone, 20 players left Wrexham on loan or in permanent deals.

Paul Mullin and Sam Dalby will face off in League One this weekend when Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers meet in what should be a heated tie.

Elsewhere, two former Wrexham players who are now on the books of National League sides are eyeing promotion.

Aaron Hayden and Luke McNicholas in promotion battle

Wrexham are no strangers to the National League, and Aaron Hayden played a key role in getting them out of it.

The defender scored 20 goals in 95 games for the Welsh side before eventually being released in 2024.

Hayden re-signed for Carlisle United last summer and was a regular feature in 2024/25 when they were relegated from League Two.

However, they have had a much better start to this season in the fifth tier, sitting third in the table with six wins, two draws and one defeat.

Meanwhile, Luke McNicholas joined Forest Green in a permanent deal from Wrexham in July.

He only played three times during his entire stint at the Racecourse Ground, but he’s now Forest Green’s number one, starting every National League match.

They are second in the division and are the only team yet to lose a match, winning six and drawing three.

Rochdale sit top of the table at present, but Forest Green are only behind via goal difference, and Carlisle are a point adrift.

How much money Wrexham made from player sales

McNicholas was one of just three players that Wrexham sold for a transfer fee this past summer.

The majority of exits were either players being released, having their contracts terminated, or sent out on loan.

The other two names sold for a fee were Jack Marriott, who joined Reading, and Luke Bolton, who moved to Mansfield Town.

Said exits earned Wrexham around £150,000, it was reported earlier this month.

That is obviously a pretty small fee when compared to the £33m they spent on 13 new players in the latest window.
