Welcome to Wrexham has played an important role in the Red Dragons’ rise but a spin-off series is being slammed.
After deciding to buy Wrexham in 2021, Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds opted to launch a documentary series.
Mac was inspired by Sunderland and their Netflix series ‘Sunderland Till I Die’, so it’s no surprise he wanted to do something similar in Wales.
Welcome to Wrexham Season 4 aired earlier this summer, showcasing the club’s 2024/25 season, which ended in promotion to the Championship.
The documentary has allowed Wrexham to grow a global audience, bringing plenty of fresh eyes to the club.
But another team that Reynolds and Mac have invested in has not fared as well.

Welcome to Wrexham spinoff given ‘painful’ review
Mac and Reynolds invested in Club Necaxa in April 2024, joining the likes of Mesut Ozil and Eva Longoria in the project.
It was confirmed in July that Necaxa were set to release a Welcome to Wrexham spinoff, which has since aired.
However, the series, which is simply named ‘Necaxa’ has not earned great reviews upon its release.
The Guardian has given it a two-star review and say that ‘Eva Longoria’s attempt at recreating Welcome to Wrexham is just painful’
Elsewhere, the Hollywood Reporter labelled the series ‘frustrating’, writing: “It is ambitious but frustrating, because without a solid foundation, none of those echoed elements from Wrexham fully work.”
Birmingham City documentary vs Welcome to Wrexham
Necaxa are not the only team to air their own documentary on the back of Welcome to Wrexham.
Birmingham City, who Tom Brady is invested in, recently launched their own series on the back of their promotion from League One.
But their show titled ‘Built In Birmingham: Brady & the Blues’ has not gone down anywhere near as well as Mac and Reynolds’ show.
Birmingham’s series has been criticised, with it remaining clear that Reynolds and Mac remain the top dogs when it comes to producing a football-based documentary.
