Why ‘quality’ player may now regret joining Wrexham – he’s only played 147 minutes under Phil Parkinson

Wrexham made some excellent signings in the 2024 summer transfer window but one player has really struggled to cement himself as a regular starter under Phil Parkinson.

The Red Dragons were not shy about splashing the cash ahead of their first season back in the third tier for over 20 years.

Wrexham broke their transfer record to sign Ollie Rathbone from Rotherham United.

The midfielder took some time to get up to speed but Rathbone has been praised by Phil Parkinson after some real top displays in recent weeks.

After signing the ex-Rotherham captain, the club moved to break their transfer record for a second time in the space of week, paying £590,000 to West Bromwich Albion for Modou Faal.

Faal has come under fire from Wrexham fans after a poor display against Crewe Alexandra earlier this week.

But the striker is still probably a lot happier than one of the Red Dragons’ other summer additions.

Why Josh Adam may regret joining Wrexham

The player in question is Josh Adam, who joined the Red Dragons as a free agent in September 2024 after being released by Premier League powerhouse Manchester City earlier in the year.

After joining, the midfielder said, as per BBC Sport: “It’s really exciting to get it over the line. I’m excited to get started and get going.”

However, it’s fair to say that the 20-year-old’s stint in Wales has likely not gone as he had hoped and he may even be regretting the move at this point.

Despite arriving in September, the Scotsman was not handed his Wrexham debut by Phil Parkinson until November 12th in an EFL Trophy clash with Port Vale.

All told, he has managed just 147 minutes of action since making the switch to Wrexham and hasn’t even made the matchday squad in the league this season.

Adam is at a crucial stage in his career where he needs to start playing regularly in order to develop but it seems unlikely he will get what he needs from the Hollywood-owned club.

What Phil Parkinson said about Wrexham midfielder Josh Adam

After making his debut against Port Vale, Parkinson praised Adam for the ‘real quality’ he showed in the clash.

He said: “Josh Adam’s first game for us, he showed real quality, I thought, at times.

“This is a big old pitch to make your debut on and I thought he was excellent.”

While the Wrexham boss was pleased with the summer addition on that occasion, it’s hard to see how he gets any meaningful minutes this season.

Ollie Rathbone, George Dobson, Andy Cannon, Matty James and Elliot Lee are all clearly ahead of him in the midfield pecking order, while George Evans and James Jones will also by trying to break into the team once they return from their respective injuries.
