Wrexham ‘class act’ praised by League One promotion rival after recent performances

Wrexham left it very late to win each of the last three home games with Steven Fletcher proving to be the hero.

The festive period is always a chaotic time for players, managers and fans with so many games in such a short space of time.

Wrexham were certainly busy with five games played from December 21 to January 4.

Three of those ended in home wins as Wrexham beat Blackpool, Wigan Athletic and Peterborough United at the STōK Cae Ras.

A draw at Bristol Rovers and defeat at Barnsley added to the disappointing away form with pundit Iwan Roberts questioning Wrexham’s record on the road.

10 points from those five games is a decent enough return for Wrexham with Phil Parkinson sitting third in the League One table.

Wycombe Wanderers star hails Steven Fletcher

Wrexham’s hero in those three home wins was Steven Fletcher.

Fletcher came off the bench to score late winners against Blackpool, Wigan and Peterborough in a quite remarkable run.

Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin are continuing their long-established partnership in attack with Fletcher coming off the bench to score big goals.

Parkinson recently praised Fletcher as ‘almost unplayable’ when coming off the bench, admitting that he loves bringing the Scot on.

Fletcher is now 37 and may not be a regular starter for Wrexham at this stage in his career, but is certainly showing his quality off the bench.

Wycombe Wanderers striker Sam Vokes is going up against Wrexham in the League One promotion race but has now praised Fletcher.

Speaking to Feast of Football, Vokes praised Fletcher as ‘quality’ and a ‘class act’.

The Welshman played with Fletcher at Wolverhampton Wanderers and noted that they spoke earlier this season, with Vokes adding that Fletcher only being on the bench sums up Wrexham’s attacking depth.

“He’s quality, he’s a class act,” said Vokes.

“When we played them earlier in the season I was chatting to him and he’s struggled with injuries and a few knocks, but when you’ve got someone like that coming off the bench with that quality… that’s what I’m thinking with this link with Bamford as well, because you’ve got Fletcher in there, obviously got Bodvarsson as well up there – and they’re the two sat on the bench, let alone Mullin and Palmer that are on the pitch.

“There’s strength in that position,” he added.

Sam Vokes may see Wrexham sign another striker

Vokes is impressed with Wrexham’s attacking options but may well see Parkinson bring in another forward.

Reports in November suggested that Wrexham want to sign a new striker as a top priority in the January window.

Wrexham are yet to make a firm move on that front but so many names have been linked.

Plymouth Argyle’s Ryan Hardie has been linked with Wrexham whilst Wrexham have targeted Bristol City’s Harry Cornick too.

A deal for Patrick Bamford may be one to forget about but Wrexham may well add another forward and only add to Parkinson’s options with Fletcher surely still a key man off the bench.
