With Paul Mullin edging closer to his exit from Wrexham, supporters have spotted one thing that the club will benefit from with the deal.

Following promotion to the Championship, Wrexham and Phil Parkinson are preparing their squad for the biggest test yet.

Wrexham are set to make wholesale changes, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney set to show no mercy and not hold on to players for sentimental reasons.

As a result, Wrexham star Paul Mullin has been linked with an exit from the Racecourse Ground due to his sheer lack of gametime which indicates that he is not part of Parkinson’s immediate plans for next season.

With one move looking likely, Wrexham fans have taken to social media to express their feelings on the news that felt inevitable, but some have also seen a massive benefit in the decision.

Wrexham fans react as Paul Mullin edges closer to Wigan Athletic move

According to Pete O’Rourke, via X, Mullin is closing in on a move to League One outfit Wigan Athletic. The Wrexham star, however, will only join the side temporarily on a loan deal for the 2025/26 season.

Whilst it is no surprise to see Wigan win the race for Mullin, with location certainly playing a major factor, it was not fully expected that the striker would only be leaving on loan.

This is something that Wrexham fans, who took to social media following the report, noticed as a major benefit to the club, with one saying that ‘I love this is a chance to let him re-establish himself with real playing time and a fresh start. If he can turn back into SPM, maybe we can bring him back in.’

Whilst this is a major boost for Wrexham, many are still gutted to see him leave, even if it is for a season.

‘Been on the cards for ages…. Don’t be sad cos he’s leaving, be happy that it happened,’ said one fan, whilst another commented: ‘Absolutely gutted he’s going, can’t lie. Wouldn’t be where we are without his contribution! Really hope he smashes it there with so many fans of other teams slagging him off in the comments!! I stand by without that injury, he would have been absolutely fine in League One.’

Loan deal could give Paul Mullin a second chance at Wrexham

Whilst many Wrexham fans might feel as though Mullin’s time at Wrexham is coming to an end, there is still a chance he can creep back into Parkinson’s plans with such a deal.

The loan move to Wigan will provide the star striker an opportunity to prove his worth in League One, hopefully in a season that is not hampered by injuries. If he can hit the ground running in the third tier, he may very well be able to carve an opening back into the Wrexham team for the following season.

Mullin has continuously defied expectations at Wrexham – it would be no surprise for him to come back fighting for his spot as the Dragons’ main focal point up top by the time the 2026/27 season swings around.
