While Wrexham may be flying high in League One this season, Paul Mullin has struggled, but Andy Morrell thinks he knows the solution.

Over the last three years, no player has been more synonymous with Wrexham’s incredible success than Paul Mullin.

The super striker’s prolific goal record has been instrumental in the Red Dragons’ rise from the National League and League Two, but Mullins’ frightening decline has been a real concern this season.

With just two goals to his name in League One so far, getting the best out of Mullin is one of the biggest challenges facing Phil Parkinson in the second half of the campaign, and could make all the difference in the title race.

Paul Mullin needs to embrace his angry side again

In an appearance on the Fearless in Devotion podcast, Wrexham legend Andy Morrell discussed Mullin’s situation and explained what the 30-year-old can do to turn things around this season.

Morrell said: “He needed a goal, and then he got one, he hit a joke of a goal [against Blackpool] and you think ‘here we go’, and then it just doesn’t seem to be happening for him. He’s playing quite some distance away from Ollie Palmer and it doesn’t seem to be working the way it has in previous seasons.”

However, Morrell and the Wrexham fans noticed something about Mullin against Barnsley on New Year’s Day, and how it could be key to him rediscovering his form eventually.

“I saw him get chucked into a barrier at Barnsley and his reaction, he came back on and he was angry,” Morrell added. “He was annoyed, but he ran harder than I’ve seen him run, he was getting in behind, he was a threat, he was putting himself about.

“That’s the Mullin we know and love, who gets stuck in and gives the defence a problem. For that half an hour I thought he was back, but then we don’t see it again in the next game. Is it just confidence at this level? He can score, he scores brilliant goals and lots of them, so fingers crossed it does happen again and he comes good and scores regularly.”

Paul Mullin isn’t getting the time and space he needs in League One

When you think about the kinds of goals Mullin used to score in League Two and especially the National League, it becomes quite apparent exactly why he is struggling at this level.

Mullin is a player who relies on pace and trickery, who loves to exploit little pockets of space and finds opportunities to produce something special. In the lower leagues, the Wrexham man was given an extra inch and an extra second to create those moments, but now, he’s being restricted by a higher quality of defender.

While Palmer, and more so, Steven Fletcher, still look capable of competing at League One Level thanks to their physicality, Mullin’s game has never been about that, and what worked for him in the past is no longer as effective.

Mullin and Palmer’s special partnership thrived on the fact the pair’s respective strengths complemented each other perfectly in the past. But, with Mullin’s influence severely limited, he and his teammate will both have to find new ways to create chances.
