Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are just two of many North Americans currently invested in Premier League and EFL football clubs.
Whether for better or for worse, Americans have been slowly taking over the English game for some time.
The Glazer family infamously owned Manchester United for many years while the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea all have owners or investors from the United States.
That influx of American – or Canadian – owners is extended well beyond the Premier League, of course, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney buying Wrexham in February 2021.
The duo have managed to take the Red Dragons into the top six of League One following many, many poor seasons in the National League.
Rob and Ryan are not the only North American duo looking to win promotion from the third tier this season, however, with Tom Brady’s Birmingham City well on course to clinch the league title.

Wrexham’s Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney missed out but Todd Boehly made £40m deal
As well as likely losing out to Brady’s side on the field, the Wrexham owners have missed out off the field, while another American has completed a huge deal.
A report from BBC Sport in September 2024 stated that the Red Dragons’ co-owners were looking to potentially invest in Welsh Fire.
It was claimed that Rob and Ryan held talks about buying a stake in the cricket franchise, which is based in Cardiff.
England and Wales Cricket Board were looking to sell a 49 percent stake in all of the eight Hundred franchises.
And now, as reported by Sky Sports, Chelsea owner Boehly has invested in Trent Rockets, meaning the only available team left to invest a 49 percent stake in is Southern Brave.
The deal cost the Blues chief £40m, while the side looked at by Rob and Ryan – Welsh Fire – has been purchased by Sanjay Govil.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds investing in teams after Wrexham success
While the duo missed out on a chance to purchase Welsh Fire, they are still investing well elsewhere.
Reynolds was linked with a £300m takeover of an MLS team recently and have already taken stakes in other football clubs.
Last year, the Wrexham owners invested in Club Necaxa before deciding to throw their money at another side in 2025.
McElhenney and Reynolds invested in La Equidad in January, paying around £24.5m.
