Wrexham are back in League One action on Thursday night as Phil Parkinson takes his side to face Shrewsbury Town away from home.
The wait is almost over for Wrexham fans.
The 1-0 home win over Peterborough United feels like a long, long time ago now.
Wrexham have been hit with two postponements in a row, meaning it’s almost two weeks since that win over the Posh.
Phil Parkinson wanted his Wrexham players to recharge and will be looking for a big win over Shrewsbury Town.
This is an important derby game for Wrexham and having beaten the Shrews 3-0 earlier this season, Parkinson will want a repeat performance.
Ryan Barnett on Shrewsbury Town fans
Wrexham players certainly understand the importance of this game.
Jack Marriott learned all about Wrexham’s rivalry with Shrewsbury and then went and scored against the Shrews in September.
One man who will know more than most is wing back Ryan Barnett.
Barnett has been Wrexham’s star man this season, racking up seven assists in League One this term.
The 25-year-old hails from Shrewsbury and came up in the club’s ranks before leaving in 2021.
Barnett wanted to become a Shrewsbury hero but felt he had to leave in order to play regularly at Solihull Moors.
Barnett has kicked on to become Wrexham’s key man on the right flank and he is constantly showing Shrewsbury what they are missing.
The Wrexham star has now told BBC Sport that he received a few boos from Shrewsbury fans upon returning to face them in the FA Cup last season.
Barnett noted that there wasn’t too much abuse and actually feels a sense of respect from Shrewsbury fans despite his Wrexham allegiance.
“I had a few boos and a few shouts from the fans in the warm up. I was on the bench, but coming on I didn’t get much from the fans,” said Barnett.
“I think they understand I was there as an academy kid more than a first team player. I felt quite a lot of respect from the Shrewsbury fans,” he added.
Ryan Barnett not the only Shrewsbury-born player in Wrexham ranks
Barnett hails from Shrewsbury just like another Wrexham player – but this one may surprise you.
Striker Steven Fletcher played for Scotland on the international stage and has just about the strongest Scottish accent you could hear.
Fletcher was born in Shrewsbury though as he and has family moved around a lot due to his father being a soldier.
At just 10, Fletcher and his mother moved to Hamilton in Scotland, which certainly explains the accent.
Fletcher has made it clear that he has absolutely no affinity to Shrewsbury though – and can’t even understand why he was born there anyway.
“I was actually born in Shrewsbury but I have never been back,” said Fletcher. “I don’t actually know why I was born in Shrewsbury, we weren’t even living there at the time either,” he added.
Fletcher will be back in Shrewsbury on Thursday night though and would no doubt love to celebrate another win alongside Barnett.
