Wrexham success in 25/26 depends on key factor Shaun Harvey has already discussed, says pundit

Wrexham have long-term plans to reach the Premier League but could find themselves stuck in the Championship if one thing happens, a pundit has suggested.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac want Wrexham in the Premier League by 2027, it emerged over the summer.

That gives Phil Parkinson and his players two shots at promotion, including the current campaign.

While it’s only early days, though, it already seems unlikely we will be seeing a fourth promotion in a row this term.

Wrexham have started the campaign fairly well, but they have won just two of their opening nine matches and have kept just one clean sheet.

Can they go on a run and make it into the play-offs? It’s not impossible. But one pundit thinks Wrexham’s success depends on a key factor that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.

What Wrexham need to be successful in the Championship

Earlier this season, after a difficult run that included a 3-1 loss to QPR, there were reports Phil Parkinson was under pressure at Wrexham.

Two journalists also agreed that Parkinson can’t reach the Premier League with the Red Dragons.

However, the club are fully behind their manager at present, with Shaun Harvey slamming reports over his future last month.

He said: “Phil has everybody at the club’s full support, you know, and no, before you start, somebody starts writing headlines, Harvey gives Parkinson the vote of confidence. That is not the vote of confidence. What I’m saying is he’s got our full support. You can only give somebody a vote of confidence when you’ve actually discussed the future.

“It’s not even been on anywhere near an agenda as yet. So, you know, listen, if that day comes, the decision has to take and be taken. But, you know, Phil’s our man. We’ve backed it. We’ve backed him from the start. We backed him from four years ago. We’ve had all the success under that regime. Why should we start panicking now?”

Now, after Wrexham’s draw with Birmingham City, EFL pundit Ryan Dilks has suggested that the club’s success this season will be determined by how long they keep Parkinson for.

He stated: “I do think a lot of Wrexham’s success this season will depend on how long they keep hold of Phil Parkinson because, as you mentioned, dropping as many points as they are from winning positions is not a good habit to have.

“Breaking down teams and winning more games, it becomes more difficult as Wrexham are finding out now. This is their third draw in a row, probably should be getting at least one or two wins from those games based off what I’ve seen of them.

“So, a lot of it will depend on how long they stick with this manager, in my personal opinion, but I would still be very surprised if they’re anywhere near the relegation zone.”

Wrexham’s unwanted Championship statistic

One of the main problems Wrexham have had this season is conceding goals.

More specifically, conceding goals when they are ahead in Championship fixtures.

After Birmingham, Wrexham have dropped nine points from winning positions this season.

They lost to Southampton after being 1-0 up, drew 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday despite having a two-goal lead, drew 1-1 with Derby County, and conceded a second-half equaliser against the Blues.

Before Saturday’s games, it meant Wrexham had dropped more points from winning positions than any side in the Championship this season.
