£300k Wrexham deal sanctioned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac was genius, Phil Parkinson has to keep him happy

Wrexham have been pretty savvy with their spending in the transfer market so far, but this summer could see the Dragons really go to town.

Wrexham certainly need new bodies in this summer. The squad as it is right now might really struggle to cope in the Championship next season, but with a few more quality additions, they could flourish.

So far this summer Wrexham have signed Ryan Hardie in a £700,000 deal. That’s exactly the kind of signing that Phil Parkinson needs more of to give his side a fighting chance in the Championship: players with experience of the division.

Not just that, but he’ll be counting on those already at the Racecourse to step up, especially those with prior Rodriguez among others could prove pivotal on and off the pitch.

Another with Championship experience is Dan Scarr. Wrexham signed Scarr from Plymouth Argyle ahead last season with Transfermarkt putting the fee at around the £300,000 mark.

Dan Scarr proved his worth at Wrexham during the run-in

Scarr, 30, only made 14 Championship appearances for Wrexham last season. He was behind several others in the pecking order but was available throughout, and when Parkinson really needed him in the final weeks of the campaign, Scarr stepped up and delivered.

After Eoghan O’Connell suffered a season-ending injury, Scarr came into the XI. Parkinson praised Scarr’s performances in the final weeks of the season: the Englishman started the last three games and kept clean sheets in two of them, standing out for his dominant presence in the heart of defence.

With Plymouth, Scarr made 28 Championship appearances in the 2023/24 season, helping to keep six clean sheets despite his side’s overall poor performances that season. Whilst Scarr proved his worth last time round, and looks set to play an important role next season, Parkinson needs to be careful how he manages the situation.

Dan Scarr was left frustrated at his Wrexham game time last season

Speaking out as early as September last year, Scarr said he was frustrated at his lack of game time under Parkinson. He wasn’t the only one who felt that way with the likes of Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer going on to be completely exiled from the first-team squad, along with a handful of others.

Scarr said: “You are allowed to be frustrated, that is only normal, but it is frustration in a good way that you want to help the team to do well which is the main goal… I will just keep training hard and help the team when I can.

“Push the lads that are playing the best I can and make sure I am ready when called upon. That is all I can do. Put myself in the best possible position to be ready.”

After seeing how Scarr performed in the final games of last season, and given the fact that he’s one of the more experienced players in the side, Parkinson knows that Scarr can play a key role next season.

But he needs to keep in mind the fact that Scarr will want regular game time. He may have already accepted that he won’t be a regular starter, but if more centre-backs arrive this summer, which seems likely, then Scarr might grow unsettled and even push for a move.

That could come late in the summer or in January and if he does move on then Parkinson and Wrexham lose a good defender. If managed properly, Scarr could be a real weapon for Wrexham next season.
