Confirmation of departing Premier League star could sound the Wrexham sirens, he should be the top target

Wrexham should look to pounce on the signing of one defender set to be released from a Premier League side.

With promotion to the Championship confirmed for Wrexham, it is clear that they are wasting no time in regards to recruitment.

Many cogs are whirring already behind the scenes, particularly in the striker department. Paul Mullin’s future at Wrexham is in doubt, with Wigan Athletic reportedly interested in signing the forward. Steven Fletcher’s departure has also made the options rather light in the forward line.

There is no doubt that, just like previous summers, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will target experienced forwards and midfielders to join their side, but defenders are usually further down the priorities list.

Nonetheless, all attention in the Wrexham recruitment team should be turned towards the departure of one Premier League star.

Wrexham should prepare deal for departing Brentford defender Ben Mee

It is clear, based on the fact that Wrexham have already been linked with Tom Lawrence, that they are hoping to bring in Championship experience this season, however, I’m sure Phil Parkinson wouldn’t turn down a sprinkling of Premier League quality within his ranks.

Wrexham have been linked with Tom Cairney, but they could go one step forward by looking to sign Brentford centre-back Ben Mee.

At 35 years old, Mee’s game time for Brentford has been rather limited, having only appeared on seven occasions in the 2024/25 Premier League season. However, his wealth of experience in the top two tiers would be crucial, having played 277 Premier League and 149 Championship clashes.

Ben Mee would provide incredible mentorship for top Wrexham star

Whilst Mee would almost certainly become one of Parkinson’s most trusted centre-backs to deploy on his side, there is certainly no underestimating the fact that the experienced defender would have a much more significant impact than what occurs on the grass.

One thing that could be crucial is Parkinson using Mee to help young defender Max Cleworth with his development, something that could help him step up yet another level.

Considering the 22-year-old was a part of Parkinson‘s National League side, Cleworth’s rise through the leagues itself has been mesmerising, and there is no doubt that having a Premier League-experienced defender in the dressing room would boost the youngster’s potential even further.
