Five free-agents who Phil Parkinson can still sign for Wrexham, including ‘great finisher’

Phil Parkinson is currently fleshing out his Wrexham squad with quality and there are still plenty of players available in the free market.

Waves of excitement currently surround Wrexham following promotion to League One and they’ve continued that momentum in the transfer market.

The Reds have captured three impressive players, landing goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, centre-back Lewis Brunt and central midfielder George Dobson.

In what Phil Parkinson describes as a ‘good core’ of a third-tier squad already, the Wrexham boss is still looking to add a couple more additions and there’s still tremendous value out there in the free transfer market.

Here are five players Wrexham could still sign on a free transfer…

Tyrese Campbell

Wrexham could now be in the market for a new striker after discovering Paul Mullin would miss the start of the 2024/25 League One campaign.

The Welsh side coped in his absence last term as he missed the opening eight matches and still scored 26 goals but could now dip into the market to temporarily fill that void.

They should look no further than pacey striker Tyrese Campbell, who was recently released from his contract at Stoke City.

Still only 24, Campbell has suffered multiple injuries as of late but did end last campaign with a flourish, scoring in victories over Southampton and Bristol City.

The Englishman – who was previously dubbed a “great finisher” – would add pace, energy and trickery to Parkinson’s frontline.

Cyrus Christie

An attacking wing-back, who can also operate as a right centre-back, Cyrus Christie saw his contract at Hull City expire this summer and is free to find another club.

The 31-year-old is a vastly experienced Championship player, having amassed 320 appearances and provided 32 assists.

Parkinson could do with some cover for the right side of his defence and someone to challenge the likes of Luke Bolton and Ryan Barnett, so signing Christie on a free transfer would be a solid piece of business.

Dimitrios Giannoulis

Wrexham are in the market for a new left-back to challenge or replace Jacob Mendy, who looks set to miss the start of the campaign with injury.

Parkinson could look at the recently released Norwich City Dimitrios Giannoulis defender as an ambitious move for the left-back position.

The 27-cap Greek international perhaps wouldn’t want to drop down to League One having played 33 times and grabbed four assists in the Championship last term, but if Wrexham have proven anything in recent years, nothing is impossible.

Joe Morrell

Joe Morrell officially announced his release from Portsmouth last week and the 27-year-old is available to sign on a free transfer.

Wrexham have been heavily linked with the Welsh international of late as reports in June suggested the Reds were looking into a move for the all-action midfielder.

Whilst Wrexham are well stocked in the engine room and have added George Dobson to their plethora of options, Morrell is fresh from winning the League One title with Pompey and would be a superb option to have.

Ben Woodburn

Ben Woodburn broke onto the scene as a 17-year-old at Liverpool and was one of their most promising young talents.

The Welsh attacking midfielder has ultimately failed to live up to expectations and following just two campaigns at Preston North End, Woodburn is now available on a free transfer.

Previously dubbed an ‘exciting’ talent by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, the 24-year-old has untapped potential that is waiting to be unlocked.

His most recent spell at Preston was far from convincing, scoring just three goals in 64 appearances but the attacking midfielder could revive his career at Wrexham and give Parkinson that extra impetus and athleticism in forward areas.
