Wrexham have a fair bit of money behind them thanks to the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, but the club wouldn’t need to spend a penny on these players.
Over the last few years, Wrexham have splashed the cash more than most Football League clubs, and it’s served them well, leading to back-to-back promotions.
The Red Dragons are pushing for yet another promotion this season, but Phil Parkinson needs to add some reinforcements to his Wrexham squad if he is to win that particular race.
There are plenty of transfers Wrexham could complete in January, but Rob and Ryan wouldn’t need to break the bank if they just turn to the free agent market instead.

Adam Reach
With almost 500 club appearances to his name, Adam Reach knows a thing or two about navigating the Football League, and he’s got plenty of experience at Championship level.
The 31-year-old winger has been without a club since being released by West Brom in the summer, and he feels like exactly the kind of signing Wrexham would make. One thing’s for sure, he would provide excellent cover for James McClean down the left-side of the pitch.
Wrexham have succeeded previously by signing players from a higher level than their current standing, and if they want to get to the Championship, they will need Championship-quality players. Reach is exactly that.

Dele Alli
Okay, this is a very ambitious suggestion, but what are Wrexham if not ambitious? The Red Dragons’ rise from the National League has been an incredible story, and they could add another exciting chapter by resurrecting the career of Dele Alli.
Dele was once the brightest young midfielder in the Premier League but personal issues and injuries have seen his career stall. Essentially, he needs a club who can help get him back to his best, and Wrexham could offer the perfect level for the 28-year-old to begin his comeback.
The main issue here is that Dele has already begun a trial with Italian outfit Como, and their manager, Cesc Fabregas, described the former Spurs man as a ‘wonderful player’ who he is keen to ‘help’ out.
However, he’s only training there for now. Perhaps Dele would prefer to stay a little closer to home, and he could well be tempted by the idea of starting out in League One again, the division where he first caught the eye with MK Dons a decade ago.
Kemar Roofe
It has been suggested that Wrexham will sign a new striker in January, largely to combat the struggles of Paul Mullin in front of goal.
Wrexham have always been a prolific outfit, but the goals have dried up a little of late. However, they don’t need to spend millions of pounds to rectify that.
Kemar Roofe has been looking for a new club since being released by Rangers in the summer, and while he struggled in the last couple of seasons, there is still a good striker in there.
The best thing is, he would offer the ideal alternative to Mullin — a quick, tricky forward — while complementing the more physical aspects of Ollie Palmer and Steven Fletcher’s game.

Jeff Hendrick
Having a strong midfield is crucial for any team, and it’s arguably a position that Wrexham are lacking in right now.
Wrexham’s summer signings, Matty James and Ollie Rathbone, added quality to the middle of the park, but the side needs a real enforcer to help them take control of games and turn over possession more effectively.
Jeff Hendrick is another player who has experience at both Championship and even Premier League level, but he’s still without a club since his release from Newcastle United in the summer.
| Club | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Derby County | 214 | 26 | 19 |
| Burnley | 139 | 10 | 7 |
| Reading | 46 | 4 | 1 |
| Newcastle United | 27 | 3 | 1 |
| Sheffield Wednesday | 12 | 1 | 0 |
| QPR | 11 | 0 | 0 |
While he would naturally be eager to keep playing at a higher level, the fact no club has come in for him yet dictates that Hendrick may have consider taking a step down. Still, there can be no more suitable challenge than helping Wrexham fight for promotion from League One.
James Tomkins
Wrexham have some great players at centre-back, with the likes of Max Cleworth and Eoghan O’Connell offering strength and stability at the back. But, with Parkinson largely employing a back three now, they need more depth.
35-year-old James Tomkins may be reaching the end of his career now, but he still has the talent to compete at League One level, at least until the end of this season.
It would be a very short-term addition to the squad, but Wrexham could benefit massively from Tomkins’ top flight experience, leadership qualities, and defensive awareness.
