Forget Steven Fletcher, 63-touch Wrexham ace who dominated in the air was real MVP vs Peterborough

Steven Fletcher helped Wrexham secure a big three points against Peterborough United on January 4th.

Wrexham fell out of the automatic promotion places recently, seeing Wycombe Wanderers overtake them.

With both teams above them having at least a game in hand, it was imperative the Red Dragons quickly bounced back from their New Year’s Day blunder.

Things didn’t get off to a great start at the Racecourse Ground, with the home side once again sluggish in attack.

Wrexham fans gave Ollie Palmer some pelters during his time on the pitch as he, like Paul Mullin, remains goal-shy.

In the end, Phil Parkinson once again had to look to his bench and superb sub Steven Fletcher to save the game.

The Scotsman replaced Palmer in the second half before scoring an 86th-minute winner, seeing Wrexham beat Peterborough 1-0.

Eoghan O’Connell excelled for Wrexham vs Peterborough United

Fletcher will steal the headlines, and rightly so, but Eoghan O’Connell once again put in another stellar shift on Saturday.

Even though their clean sheet record has taken a hit in recent weeks and he wasn’t at his best against Barnsley, the centre-back has been one of the club’s most consistent performers in 2024/25.

Wrexham were back to their defensively-sound best against Peterborough and have still conceded the second-fewest goals in League One this term behind Birmingham (who have played two games less).

And while he doesn’t always get the praise he deserves, O’Connell was immense once more over the weekend and the stats show it.

Eoghan O’Connell stats vs Peterborough United

O’Connell was part of a new-look backline against Peterboriugh that saw Jacob Mendy and Sebastian Revan starting as wing-backs.

There was no Lewis Brunt either, who had been in top form before his injury.

O’Connell led by example, however, winning the most aerial duels of any Wrexham player on the pitch and being named Sofascore’s highest-rated player from the clash.

With goals still a problem for the Red Dragons, they must keep their excellent defensive record intact, and as long as O’Connell is playing, that is likely to happen.
