Four years ago today Paul Mullin joined Wrexham, one thing he said in his first interview is heart-breaking now

Despite having left the club, Paul Mullin remains a very active topic among Wrexham fans on social media.

Paul Mullin has joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan from Wrexham. The striker barely featured under Phil Parkinson last season and going into this summer it was clear that he was no longer in the first-team plans.

Despite that, Parkinson insisted that Mullin would begin pre-season training at Wrexham, though he’d sealed his loan move to Wigan before the club’s pre-season tour down under.

Since, Mullin has made his debut for Wigan and he even got on the scoresheet in a recent friendly game against Liverpool’s U21s. Next season, expect Wrexham fans to pay keen interest on how Mullin fares in League One and expect Mullin to do likewise as Wrexham take on the Championship.

Paul Mullin signed for Wrexham four years ago today

Signing from Cambridge United in the summer of 2021, Mullin initially signed a three-year contract at the Racecourse. Then, in January 2024, the 30-year-old striker signed a contract extension keeping him with the club until the summer of 2027.

But upon initially signing for the club, Mullin stated his ambitions to stay with Wrexham for at least the duration of his three-year contract, if not more. A statement that now seems heart-breaking given how he’s fallen out of favour and has seemingly played his last game for the club.

Mullin said in his first Wrexham interview: “They’ve [the owners] got an idea of where they want to be and I want to be a part of that journey, so signing here for three years just then tells everybody that I want to be a part of it for the next three years at least, if not longer.”

Why Paul Mullin may have played his last game for Wrexham

Mullin has only left Wrexham on loan. Wrexham have the option to recall Mullin in the January transfer window and Wigan do not have the option to buy him at the end of next season.

Despite that, there is an overwhelming sense that Mullin has played his last game in Wrexham colours. Or at least that was the mood given off by many, including owners Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds.

Upon Mullin’s move to Wigan, Reynolds and Mac gave an emotional goodbye to Mullin. It suggests that behind the scenes, there is a sense at least that Mullin will no longer be in Wrexham’s future plans, and that this loan move to Wigan is simply to keep him active next season, whereas if he had stayed at Wrexham going into next season, he may not have played at all.

Wrexham are due to play two more pre-season friendlies before their season opener against Southampton on August 9th, with a game against Dutch side FC Groningen scheduled for August 2nd.
