Comparing two of Wrexham’s top targets shows that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney should put all their eggs in one basket.
Wrexham will likely undergo vast changes in regards to personnel this season, with some departures already confirmed.
Notably, Wrexham released Steven Fletcher, a decision that has been deemed to be controversial after the Scotsman confirmed that leaving the Racecourse Ground was ‘not by choice’.
Paul Mullin may also potentially move on from Wrexham this summer, with Wigan Athletic reportedly interested in attaining the services of the Dragons legend.
There are also updates in regards to incomings, with both Tom Cairney and Tom Lawrence linked to Wrexham – we broke down the stats of each player and worked out which direction Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney should go with their next midfielder.

Wrexham midfield targets Tom Lawrence and Tom Cairney compared
The potential signing of Tom Cairney may be difficult because of his ongoing allegiances to Fulham, however, Wrexham are ready to pounce if the Premier League club do not offer him a new deal.
Wrexham have also identified the younger Tom Lawrence as an option in the centre of the park, whose deal at Rangers expires this summer.
Here is how the pair compare…
| Tom Lawrence | Tom Cairney | |
| Current team | Rangers | Fulham |
| Age | 31 | 34 |
| Favoured position | Attacking-midfield | Central-midfield |
| League appearances (2024/25) | 18 | 24 |
| Goals (2024/25) | 4 | 2 |
| Premier League appearances (career) | 4 | 143 |
| Championship appearances (career) | 264 | 318 |
| Best Championship season | 9G, 11A (2016/17) | 12G, 11A (2016/17) |
The main outlier between the pair sees Lawrence notably a few years younger than Cairney, however, the Fulham man’s Premier League experience will count for a lot in this Wrexham side.

Phil Parkinson must ensure he opts for the most reliable option
Whilst there is very little to separate both Lawrence and Cairney in regards to goalscoring ability, as well as being unplayable at Championship level in their prime, there must be plenty of consideration towards which of the pair has been in a better vein of form this season, and that is undoubtedly the Fulham midfielder.
Wrexham’s stance does rest on whether Cairney will be handed a new deal at Craven Cottage, and it would make sense to go for Lawrence if it becomes clear that Fulham are likely to keep hold of their captain.
Despite his increased age, Cairney would still be a top player at Championship level – considering he is able to show higher levels than Lawrence, who has been playing in the Scottish Premiership, suggests that Cairney would be more likely to hit the ground running next season.
