Wrexham need further additions to improve the quality and depth of their squad.

The defeat to Sydney would not have worried Phil Parkinson in terms of the result but the lack of creativity and sharpness on the ball was evident for all to see.

Wrexham are set to sign Liberato Cacace to add further variety to their options along the left flank but fans will be expecting to see more movement.

Ryan Hardie’s arrival at Wrexham means the club are no longer looking to add strikers to their squad and that could allow one member of Parkinson’s repertoire to finally stamp his authority on the team.

Harry Ashfield set for breakthrough season at Wrexham

Wrexham fans have been impressed with Harry Ashfield during his opening two pre-season displays and he may well have forced his way into Parkinson’s plans for the season.

Ashfield has played up top in the clashes with Melbourne and Sydney but has been the player to drop deeper and help link up play with the midfield.

Sam Smith is yet to feature on the tour after struggling with injury and the same goes for Modou Faal after thigh surgery.

With Paul Mullin’s departure to Wigan and Ollie Palmer seemingly out of favour at the club, it opens up a real opportunity for Ashfield.

His displays so far would have done him no harm in proving that he can be a big part of the squad this season and make an impact from the bench or even from the start in some matches.

Phil Parkinson told he has a ‘freebie’ in Harry Ashfield

According to journalist Nathan Salt, speaking on the latest episode of the Rob.Ryan.Red podcast, Parkinson has a ‘freebie’ in having Ashfield in and around his squad this season.

Salt stated: “He [Ashfield] is essentially a freebie player because Wrexham will have 25 players over the age of 21 registered. He will not count in that. So that he is unique in that way he will be valuable.”

Wrexham were looking to loan Ashfield in order to gain first-team experience but his performances down under and the club’s current transfer stance on strikers could force a change of thinking.

The 18-year-old has already proven he can cut it with the first-team squad and his youthful exuberance may just add some value to the Championship assault.
