International boss would surely be left frustrated if free agent completes Wrexham move, talks underway

Wrexham are yet to make a new signing this summer but goalkeeper Danny Ward appears to be firmly on the radar.

Wrexham fans had to wait until the later stages of June for the first signing of last summer’s transfer window.

Phil Parkinson pounced to sign Arthur Okonkwo on a permanent basis, having been impressed during his loan spell from Arsenal.

Parkinson tends to be patient in the transfer market but Wrexham do appear to be ramping up recruitment plans.

Tom Cairney is considering an offer to join Wrexham and The Wrexham Insider understands Parkinson is eyeing Craig Dawson and Aaron Cresswell.

A fascinating rumour emerged earlier this week, with Wrexham holding talks to sign Danny Ward after his exit from Leicester City.

Craig Bellamy would surely be frustrated if Danny Ward joins Wrexham

Leicester released Ward at the end of his contract, meaning the goalkeeper is now searching for a new club.

Ward quit Wrexham for Liverpool back in 2012, leaving the STōK Cae Ras as a teenager having shown early promise.

A return to North Wales could now be on the cards, with reports suggesting Wrexham have held talks with Ward.

Ward may fancy a homecoming, but Wales boss Craig Bellamy would be forgiven for feeling more than a little frustrated.

This is a real chance for Ward to go out and find himself a club where he can be the first-choice goalkeeper.

Ward has spent so much of his career on the bench, but his status as a free agent gives him the chance to go and find regular first-team football.

Instead, Ward is now in talks over a move to Wrexham – which would see him serve as second-choice at best.

Karl Darlow served as Wrexham’s first-choice goalkeeper in this international period, with Ward on the bench.

Darlow is unlikely to start many games for Leeds in the Premier League and Ward could have surely pushed to become Wales’ first-choice stopper.

Bellamy, while respecting the decisions of his players, would ideally have multiple goalkeepers playing regularly and giving him some difficult decisions to make.

Instead, Ward may join Wrexham and sit on the bench once again, surely leaving Bellamy frustrated as he risks having his top two goalkeepers kicking their heels.

Wrexham move for Danny Ward still feels surprising

Our first reaction when Wrexham were linked with Ward was one of shock.

Arthur Okonkwo is such a fantastic goalkeeper and is destined to play in the Premier League for a long time.

Wrexham even have a fine backup goalkeeper, as Callum Burton impressed in limited action last season.

Parkinson is allowing three goalkeepers to leave Wrexham this summer, with Mark Howard, Liam Hall and Brad Foster all moving on.

A third-choice goalkeeping addition would not have surprised anybody, but signing Ward raises questions.

Ward certainly won’t replace Okonkwo any time soon, and you could even question whether he is an upgrade on Burton as a number two.

Ward would surely be an expensive signing as a third-choice goalkeeper, so, aside from the fact that he is a local boy and a free agent, we just can’t make sense of this potential move.
