January exit now looks very likely for Wrexham forgotten man after latest Phil Parkinson comments

Wrexham will no doubt be busy once again in the next transfer window, which will open in January.

The summer was expected to be a busy one at Wrexham. But 13 signings and a £40million total spend on new players trumped everyone’s expectations for the Dragons.

But it wasn’t all positive for Phil Parkinson and co who had to let go of some previously key players like Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer.

Whilst Wrexham smashing transfer records and then spending £6.5million to sign Ben Sheaf on deadline day is exciting for fans, there was also a lot of pain for the club having to sell certain players, and let go of others.

For instance, after Mullin and Palmer left, Wrexham then released Eoghan O’Connell, with Dom Hyam arriving on deadline day to put the Irishman even further out of contention.

Is this the end for Elliot Lee at Wrexham?

Another player who’s down the pecking order right now is Elliot Lee. Last season’s joint-top scorer with Sam Smith (he only scored eight for Wrexham but 17 league goals across the season with Reading and Wrexham), Lee has been an unused substitute in every Championship game so far, solely playing in the Carabao Cup.

The arrival of Sheaf on deadline day only puts Lee even further out of the picture, and the recent news that Ollie Rathbone is set for a return won’t come as good news for the 30-year-old Lee either, especially given how highly Parkinson has spoken of Rathbone.

Rathbone was left out of Wrexham’s 25-man squad but is set for a return. Parkinson said recently: “We need Ollie back, he’s a key player for us. He was instrumental for us last year. He’s a player who has played in the Championship; first year did well, second one was a difficult one at Rotherham because they had a very weak squad.

“But he’s played at this level and when he signed for us, he was determined to get back into the Championship… His energy and his quality, I can’t wait to get Ollie back out with us.”

Elliot Lee’s contract at Wrexham, and the club’s stance on selling him

Parkinson speaking so highly of Rathbone suggests that he might walk straight back into the team, and straight back into the XI when he’s fit to do so, whenever that might be.

With Lee not being able to make an appearance in the league as it is, even before the arrival of Sheaf, it’s not looking good for the former Luton Town man, whose contract at the Racecourse runs until the summer of 2027.

But this summer, there were reports that Wrexham were ready to sell Lee, though obviously he remains at the club.

Should he slip into a similar situation to the likes of Mullin and Palmer in the second half of last season then expect him and the club to part ways in the January transfer window.
