One downside to Wrexham transfer strategy is now clear, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds got it wrong

Wrexham have got one thing wrong in recent years, and it could come back to haunt them.

Wrexham achieved promotion to the Championship in the 2024/25 season, notching an automatic spot in League One alongside Birmingham City.

As a result, Phil Parkinson will be making several changes to his squad as he looks to equip it as best as possible for the challenge of the Championship.

This includes moving several strikers on – Steven Fletcher has already departed Wrexham under controversial circumstances after he suggested that him leaving the Racecourse Ground wasn’t by choice.

Paul Mullin could be the next striker to depart, whilst another forward has already left. The striker situation does show one thing that Wrexham haven’t quite got spot on, and they will be feeling the effects of that.

Wrexham will regret how they handled Sam Dalby as he nears Bolton Wanderers move

Former Wrexham striker Sam Dalby is set to move to Bolton Wanderers following the conclusion of his contract at the Racecourse Ground.

Dalby endured a fine spell in the Scottish Premiership this season, bagging 15 goals across the entire league season.

It has been a fine campaign for the 25-year-old, who was made surplus to requirements at the start of the season due to the sheer quantity of strikers that Parkinson had at his disposal.

In most situations, clubs would be keen to keep hold of their strikers after such a successful loan period, at a high level as well, but Wrexham’s handling of Dalby put the writing on the wall for him, and despite a successful season, it was always clear that he wouldn’t want to follow it up at the Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham transfer strategy could make summer transfer window difficult

As of right now, Wrexham have at least seven strikers on the books ahead of the 2025/26 season, and it is safe to say that the majority aren’t quite at Championship level.

Wrexham will need to be brutal this summer and let go of as many players as possible to make way for proven Championship quality, and that could include letting go of some well-revered players at the Racecourse Ground.

Parkinson could find himself with little wriggle room to bring strikers in, as he will need to if they are to continue in their upwards trajectory, so departures must be prioritised as a result.

Competition is always needed in a squad, but Wrexham’s number of strikers have always been excessive, and they will want to make sure that they don’t lose a youngster of Dalby’s quality similarly in the future.
