Wrexham have gone from strength to strength since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over the club in 2021.

After spending over a decade in the National League, Wrexham were bought by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in February 2021.

Their first few months at the Racecourse Ground ended in the club missing out on a play-off finish on the final day.

Heartbreak in the play-offs followed in 2021/22, but after finally ending their 15-year stint in the National League in 2022/23, Wrexham have continued to climb up the EFL.

The Red Dragons won promotion to the Championship on April 26, becoming the first team ever to win three in a row.

It was a remarkable achievement, and just how crazy their rise has been under their current owners should be sinking in, given the calibre of players already linked this summer.

Wrexham now eyeing high-quality stars under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

It’s easy to forget, given how much success they have enjoyed of late, that Wrexham were still a National League club in 2023.

Yet, less than three years on, they are now competing with a Premier League team for one signing.

Leeds United won promotion out of the second tier this past season, pipping Burnley to the title.

Meanwhile, it has now been reported late in May that Wrexham want to sign Aaron Cresswell and are facing competition from Leeds for his signature.

Given he is now 35, some Dragons fans may turn their noses up at the prospect of another ageing player arriving at the club.

Yet Cresswell is a former England international, has won the Europa Conference League, and is still good enough to be attracting interest from a club who will be competing in the top tier next term.

Wrexham eyeing more Premier League players

If you had told Wrexham fans in 2020 that they’d be competing for established Premier League stars, they probably would have laughed in your face.

However, Reynolds and McElhenney now have the club on the hunt for multiple top-flight assets.

Tom Cairney was previously linked to the club, while Wrexham want Premier League loan signings this summer, as mentioned by Parkinson.

He said: “The loan market is something we are looking at. It’s all about touching base with the Premier League loan managers, making sure we have an understanding of who could become available.

“A lot of those players (whose loan spells for 2024-25 have now ended) will probably go back and start pre-season with their clubs because managers like numbers around them for pre-season games. We can probably attract a better calibre of player than we’d have been able to do in the past.”
