Wrexham have kickstarted their summer preparations by reportedly offering Fulham stalwart Tom Cairney a contract.

Wrexham have already set their bar high this summer amid reports that the club wants to sign Tom Cairney from Fulham.

It was initially revealed that Wrexham were in talks to sign Cairney this summer, with the 34-year-old coming to the end of his contract at Craven Cottage following a 10-year spell with the club.

It was then reported that Wrexham have offered a contract to Cairney worth a staggering £50,000-a-week, which would make him by far the highest-paid player in Wrexham’s history. But rumours of Cairney heading to the Racecourse quietened down as Fulham finished their campaign.

Cairney started and played 74 minutes of Fulham’s final game of the season at Craven Cottage, bowing out with a 2-0 defeat against Man City having played 25 times in the Premier League this season, scoring twice.

In total, Cairney has played 354 games for Fulham, scoring 47 goals from the centre of midfield and winning promotion from the Championship three times with the West London club.

Tom Cairney on his Fulham future after Wrexham table contract offer

Speaking after Fulham’s final game of the season against Man City, Cairney spoke out on his future at the club, revealing that he and Fulham remain in talks over a possible renewal but insisting that he doesn’t know where his future will lie. It suggests Cairney is weighing up his options with Wrexham being one of them.

Speaking to Hammy End, Cairney said: “We’ll see what happens next week. We’re still in talks, so it’s a weird feeling right now. I don’t know which way to go about it, obviously I want to thank a few people, but at the same time, we’re still in talks.”

Expect Cairney to take a break following the end of another commanding season in the Premier League, then to make a decision on where his future lies with the former Scotland international likely to have a lot of options from both England and overseas.

Marco Silva comments on Tom Cairney’s Fulham future

Whilst Cairney might still be undecided on his future at the club, Fulham boss Marco Silva appears to be more in the clear.

Speaking after the City game, Silva suggested Cairney has played his final game for Fulham. When asked if Cairney has played his last for the Cottagers, Silva simply replied: “I think so, to be honest.”

Fulham fans are desperate for Cairney to stay though, and that shows how good a player he still is. For Wrexham, a deal to bring Cairney down to the Championship could be a really season-defining one for the Dragons, who’ll certainly need a few players with Cairney’s ability next season.

The summer transfer window opens on June 1st for teams in England.
