Paul Mullin prediction has come true and £1.3m-a-year star will be the next victim

As Wrexham continue their rise up the EFL, more and more players are falling out of favour.

On the final day of the 2025 summer transfer window, Wrexham let three players leave the club.

A further three signings were also made on September 1, taking their summer total to 13.

Wrexham’s squad value has increased a great deal following their summer spending spree.

But with all the new faces joining, previously important players are no longer required, as has been the case in seasons past.

Why did Wrexham let Paul Mullin leave

In 2024/25, Wrexham were battling to win League One promotion, but their strikers were struggling for goals.

Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin scored just three league goals each that campaign, leading to Phil Parkinson dropping both players at the end of January.

After the latter was axed from the squad, Sky Sports pundit George Elek suggested that Wrexham had outgrown Mullin.

He said: “When you look at their attacking talent, Steven Fletcher has done okay in moments, Marriott is okay when he’s fit, which isn’t that often.

“It feels like the Paul Mullin, Wrexham story [is coming to an end]. Maybe they have outgrown him now.

“He’s been unable to really force his way into the side (and) when he has, he hasn’t really looked the player that he was for them, and he kind of shoots from anywhere and then Ollie Palmer, again, is someone who I think they’re kind of leaving behind.”

That indeed proved to be the case, with Mullin joining Wigan Athletic on loan this summer and Palmer moving to Swindon Town.

Now, the same thing could happen to another Wrexham player this season.

Wrexham have already outgrown Jay Rodriguez

When Mullin and Palmer were dropped, Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez were signed as replacements on January 31, 2025.

The duo played every League One game from their arrival until the very end of the season.

Rodriguez is currently injured, but even when he returns to action, it is clear he has now dropped far down the striker pecking order.

Kieffer Moore, Ryan Hardie, Sam Smith, Nathan Broadhead and Josh Windass are all ahead of the former Burnley man.

Rodriguez was given a hefty contract, which Capology report sees him take home £1.3m-a-year. But despite his big wages, it’s hard to see how he gets back into the team moving forward.
