Paul Mullin’s message after Birmingham City draw is now devastating, nobody saw it coming

Nobody could have predicted what happened to Paul Mullin shortly after Wrexham’s last meeting with Birmingham City.

Wrexham return to Championship action on Friday evening, facing off with Birmingham City.

The Red Dragons are on a good run of form away from home, most recently drawing 1-1 with a Leicester City team with promotion ambitions.

Their form at the Racecourse Ground by comparison is poor, with Wrexham failing to win at home in the Championship this term.

Birmingham City, however, are not as dominant as they were in 2024/25 when the Blues won 111 points, and most recently drew 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday.

They still probably fancy their chances of getting something from Friday’s encounter, however, given they haven’t lost to Wrexham since the 90s, including picking up four points across two matches last term.

What happened last time Wrexham played Birmingham City

In early 2024/25, Birmingham beat Wrexham 3-1 at St Andrew’s, but the reverse fixture was much closer.

The pair went head-to-head on January 23, 2025, playing out a 1-1 draw.

Ollie Rathbone opened the scoring after nine minutes before Lyndon Dykes equalised in the 18th minute.

Paul Mullin did not start the fixture, but he did come on in the second half and shared his verdict on the tie post-match.

Paul Mullin message after Birmingham City

Shortly after the Birmingham stalemate, Mullin posted a message to Instagram.

He wrote: “Disappointed to only have came away with a point but some shift from the lads! Onto Tuesday at home!”

A fair standard message on the surface, yes, but the final line is now pretty heartbreaking.

‘Tuesday at home’ was the infamous 3-2 defeat to Stevenage – the first time Wrexham lost at the Racecourse in 2024/25.

Not only was it a shock loss, but it also ended up being the last game Mullin played for the Dragons in League One before he was completely axed from the squad by Phil Parkinson.

The striker has now joined Wigan Athletic on loan, and while he does have one year left on his contract, it’s hard to see him having any sort of future in North Wales.
