Wrexham and Preston North End are set to face off in a Carabao Cup clash later today.

The Red Dragons’ winless start to the Championship season continued on Saturday with a 2-2 draw against Sheffield Wednesday.

Wrexham now face Preston North End in the Carabao Cup tie on August 26, looking to secure their second win in the competition.

The Welsh side beat another Championship club, Hull City, in the last round after coming from 3-1 down.

How Phil Parkinson can shock Wrexham fans vs Preston North End

Ahead of taking on Preston, Phil Parkinson has shared a Wrexham injury update.

In it, he mentioned how they need to be careful with Nathan Broadhead and spoke about the swelling around Kieffer Moore’s ankle after the striker once again had to receive treatment during the West Brom tie.

He said: “Kieffer, his ankle has settled down again, so we’ll look at him tomorrow. Nathan Broadhead’s got a bit of a tight calf and we have to be cautious with players because the ones who have come in and been at other clubs have picked up little niggles, some worse than others with George [Thomason] and Josh [Windass], so we’ve got to be careful with Nathan, but he’ll get there.”

Given the priority has to be the Championship, it wouldn’t make much sense for Parkinson to risk starting Moore in a competition that, in the grand scheme of things, doesn’t mean much to Wrexham and they are unlikely to win it even if they are able to progress to the later rounds.

It sounds as though Broadhead may not be risked either, while Jay Rodriguez and Josh Windass are already sidelined.

Therefore, we could, just like Hull, see Ollie Palmer given a rare place in the squad against Preston.

Sam Smith and Ryan Hardie will most likely start the fixture, but Palmer could make a return to the team and come off the bench.

Ollie Palmer Wrexham future latest

Palmer’s inclusion would come as a surprise given he’s been told he can leave Wrexham this summer.

However, that was already the case before he was a shock inclusion on the bench against the Tigers.

There is now less than a week of the transfer window to go, and the 33-year-old is still at the Racecourse.

But Parkinson commented on players leaving after the Sheffield Wednesday draw, saying more exits are expected.

He said: “There’s bits and pieces going on [incomings/outgoings]… We will review this game and have a chat as a staff tomorrow. One or two players may be going and one or two may be coming in.”
