Phil Parkinson should avoid Kieffer Moore at all costs, it’s time for Wrexham to evolve

Wrexham have really started to make moves in the transfer market now, but the latest links to Kieffer Moore suggest the club is still stuck in the past.

With George Thomason the latest Wrexham signing this summer, and Josh Windass expected to follow soon, the Red Dragons are building a decent squad ahead of the new campaign.

Any talk of Wrexham being in a relegation fight in 2025/26 appears to have died off now, with many expecting Phil Parkinson’s men to be fairly comfortable in the Championship without really challenging at the top.

However, with suggestions Wrexham might spend £10m on a new striker, there was some buzz around who they could sign. If Kieffer Moore is the best they can come up with, though, then fans will surely be disappointed.

The latest report comes from the Sheffield Star, with suggestions Wrexham are keeping an eye on Moore with a view to plotting a move for the experienced striker.

There is little information regarding Wrexham’s interest aside from the fact they are looking at the Welsh striker, but it is said Sheffield United would be reluctant to let him go given their relative lack of options in attack.

Moore does turn 33 at the start of the season, though, and the Blades must surely have it in the back of their minds that now may be the best time to cash in on the big striker.

However, for Wrexham, these links tell us one thing: Phil Parkinson is not ready to abandon his penchant for the long ball and the target man approach.

Parkinson was criticised at times last season for being one-dimensional and predictable. His style of play has often catered to the likes of Ollie Palmer and Steven Fletcher; big strikers who can hold up the ball for others around them.

Admittedly, that tactic does work, but Parkinson will surely know he will get found out very quickly in the Championship if that’s all he’s got in the locker.

With £10m to spend, Wrexham have to be more ambitious. They need goals, and they need someone who offers them something different. Simply put, Wrexham need to evolve, and Kieffer Moore will not bring about that progression.

Kieffer Moore’s statistics paint a worrying picture

You may think Moore is simply a big lad up top who can head a ball and use his strength, but it would be unfair not to credit him for having fairly good footwork for such a physical player.

With 59 goals in 200 Championship appearances, though, he’s simply not clinical enough. Moore is not a bad striker by any means, but he’s not someone who will come in and transform Wrexham or push them up the table.

Last season, Moore scored five goals for the Blades in 27 appearances and 1,767 minutes of football. Worryingly, though, he generated an xG of 9.2 across the season, so he’s massively underperforming against that metric.

He also had a shots on target ratio of 27%, which is well below what you’d normally see for a striker in the Championship (anecdotally, you’re looking at more like 40-50% as a standard).

On average per 90 minutes, Moore produced 1.94 shot-creating actions, and just 0.20 goal-creating actions. He’s simply not creative or clinical enough, and the numbers prove it.
