Phil Parkinson is building a Wrexham squad for the long-term and is making plans to further enhance the quality of his squad and starting XI, Wrexham Insider understands.

Wrexham have signed George Thomason from Bolton Wanderers in a £1.2m deal with the midfielder signing a three-year contract at the Racecourse Ground.

Thomason is said to be ‘perfect’ for Phil Parkinson by the Bolton Wanderers fans, who are sad to see the industrious midfielder depart their club.

Wrexham are not finished yet with their transfer business and the capture of Thomason is part of a long-term plan being formulated by Parkinson.

Wrexham keen to add more Championship experience to their ranks

The Red Dragons are not content with stopping at Thomason with Josh Windass set for a medical at Wrexham ahead of a proposed free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday.

Wrexham Insider’s chief transfer expert Graeme Bailey believes that there will be more additions after Windass and Parkinson is ensuring that he continues to add Championship experience to his squad.

Bailey stated: “George Thomason is another important and yet unspectacular signing – in terms that he is not a ‘Hollywood’ signing – he is not a Tom Cairney and Jamie Vardy…but he is a Phil Parkinson signing.

“He is a top EFL performer but one who has not really proven at Championship level but one who is ready to make the step.

“Phil Parkinson is building long-term – we have seen that with Ryan Hardie, with Liberto Cacace – none of them cheap, but all ready to make an immediate impact.

“Parkinson is not changing the way he plays, he is not changing his system but he is improving the XI and the squad.

“The impending move for Josh Windass is another, a top Championship player and we will see that with the next central defender – it will be someone with Championship experience.”

Where will George Thomason and Josh Windass fit in at Wrexham?

Parkinson has targeted the central midfield position this summer and he finally looks set to add to his options in the middle of the park.

Wrexham fans were begging for ‘creativity’ after the disappointing performances and defeats to Sydney and Wellington. It now looks like they have that answer.

The Wrexham boss has a number of options with Windass, he could use the 31-year-old as a second striker or as an advanced midfielder.

Thomason will be used in a more defensive role in midfield, providing competition for the likes of Matty James and George Dobson.

It means that Wrexham have more options to tweak their system slightly in using Thomason’s energy and endeavour to compensate for a ‘free’ role for Windass to roam and make things happen.
