The League One promotion race is getting more and more intense as the weeks go by, but major developments over the last few days have changed everything.
Wrexham are once again gunning for promotion, hoping to make it to the Championship at the first time of asking this year.
Phil Parkinson’s men are third in the League One table, just two points off top spot after 25 games. But, Birmingham City would appear to be clear favourites for the title as things stand.
While Wrexham are looking to leapfrog Wycombe Wanderers now, the Red Dragons should be looking over their shoulders instead.

Huddersfield have recruited well in January and are now a major threat
So far this month, we have seen Huddersfield dominate the transfer market and act swiftly and shrewdly to snap up the signings of Joe Taylor and Dion Charles.
This January movement highlights Wrexham’s need to add to their squad, lest they get left behind by their promotion rivals.
After Wycombe dropped points against Huddersfield recently, the Terriers have closed the gap on the top three and turned the battle for promotion into a four-horse race.
Indeed, the impending clash between Huddersfield and Wrexham is pinned as a key game in the promotion race and could end up being decisive come the end of the season.
With Wycombe losing important players already this month, and Matt Bloomfield taking the top job at Luton Town, we could well see them suffer a dramatic drop-off, leaving Huddersfield and Wrexham to fight it out for second place.

Wrexham need new signings and some momentum to stay on track
Wrexham have been frustrated in the transfer market so far, with targets joining other clubs, but surely, by the end of the window, the Red Dragons will have added to their squad.
If they do, in particular if they can address the need for more firepower, then there is no reason Wrexham can’t keep up their challenge at the top and get promoted once again.
| Pos | Team | Played | W | D | L | GD | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Birmingham | 23 | 16 | 5 | 2 | 24 | 53 |
| 2 | Wycombe | 25 | 15 | 6 | 4 | 23 | 51 |
| 3 | Wrexham | 25 | 15 | 6 | 4 | 19 | 51 |
| 4 | Huddersfield | 24 | 14 | 5 | 5 | 18 | 47 |
| 5 | Barnsley | 25 | 12 | 6 | 7 | 6 | 42 |
| 6 | Reading | 24 | 12 | 5 | 7 | 6 | 41 |
Another big issue, and one very much outside of Wrexham’s control right now, is the lack of momentum they’ve been able to gather in 2025. Between the EFL Trophy game versus Port Vale being postponed and FA Cup scheduling, Wrexham have gone almost a fortnight without a game, and they’ll need to get back in the swing of things when they travel to Shrewsbury on Thursday night.
Wrexham have more than a month now to get that all-important wind in their sails with a run of positive results, but they’ll need to match Huddersfield’s ambition in the transfer market, too, if they are to win this fight for promotion.
