Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could sign free agent ‘interested’ in transfer to boost Wrexham promotion hope

Wrexham are in a tight battle for promotion, but recent injuries could hamper Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s quest to make it three in a row.

The Red Dragons were in League One action on March 4th, facing off with fellow promotion chasers, Huddersfield Town.

When all was said and done, Wrexham beat Huddersfield 1-0 thanks to another goal from super-sub Steven Fletcher.

They remain two points off second place in the hunt for automatic promotion as a result but it wasn’t all great news on Tuesday.

Though a specific injury is yet to be confirmed by Wrexham, George Dobson went straight down the tunnel with a member of Wrexham’s medical staff and was shaking his head when he was taken off against Huddersfield, seemingly suggesting there was a problem.

If Dobson is now sidelined, it will leave the club incredibly short of options in midfield after Andy Cannon’s injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

In turn, it wouldn’t be the worse idea in the world if Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney sanctioned a move for a free agent to ensure Parkinson’s midfield is well-stocked for the remainder of the club’s promotion push.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney should sign midfielder for Wrexham

When Wrexham registered their League One squad following the close of the 2025 winter transfer window, they omitted Luke Bolton and Will Boyle.

This means there is room for the Red Dragons to sign two free agents during the remainder of the campaign.

Given they could now be without two of their main midfielders for a period, signing someone to cover in the centre of the park, much like they did with Matty James in October, makes sense.

There aren’t a ton of star-studded names still available at this stage of the season, but Joe Morrell could be a great option.

Crucially, speaking back in October 2024, Morell admitted interest in joining Wrexham if the club were in the market for a midfielder.

He said: “Wrexham is obviously an exciting club at the minute.

“I think in the Football League, there are not many more exciting projects than Wrexham, and to play for a Welsh club is something I would love to do at some point as well.

“But to be fair, I don’t think they need much help at the minute. Maybe they’re not in the market for a midfielder, but if they were, then it definitely would be something I’d be interested in.”

What Wrexham fans need to know about Joe Morrell

Morrell began his playing career on the books of Bristol City and has had spells with the likes of Lincoln City and Luton Town.

He most recently lined out for Portsmouth and made 27 League One appearances en route to their promotion from League One in 2023/24.

The 28-year-old has been a free agent since the summer, but as he’d only likely be needed as a rotation option anyway, he could still bring some valuable experience to the club even if he’s not fully match fit.

Morrell is also a Wales international, having played 37 times for his country since making his debut in September 2019.
