When Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith could make their Wrexham debuts already clear after Parkinson comments

It has been a busy 24 hours for Wrexham, with two signings made ahead of their meeting with Crawley Town.

The Red Dragons had a very quiet transfer window with just one player signed before deciding to announce two more additions in the space of a few hours.

Sam Smith joined Wrexham from Reading in a club-record deal on Friday afternoon, bringing with him a wealth of goals.

The now former Royals star has already scored 11 times in League One this term – nearly double the tally of any other Red Dragons centre-forward in 2024/25.

Shortly after Smith was announced, Wrexham were linked with Jay Rodriguez before his arrival was then confirmed just a few hours later.

Fans are now no doubt keen to see the duo in action and Phil Parkinson may already have hinted at changes this week.

Phil Parkinson comments could be great for Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith

Wrexham kick off against Crawley Town in a 3pm meeting on Saturday afternoon.

It comes on the back of a shocking 3-2 loss against Stevenage in midweek, which put an end to the club’s 22-game unbeaten streak at home.

Now, speaking ahead of Crawley, as per Leader Live, the manager discussed team selection and picking players who will fight for the badge.

He said: “I’ve got to look quickly at that, look at the reasons why and make sure we pick a team at the weekend which is going to fight tooth and nail for the badge.

“We’ve got players who didn’t play on Tuesday and they’ve got every right to knock on my door if they don’t get selected for the weekend.

“I’ve just got to make sure that we’ve got fight in the team, that’s what we’re all about here.”

The eleven that started in midweek certainly didn’t do that and with attack once more a problem area, the Wrexham boss could well throw Smith and Rodriguez straight into the starting lineup.

Wrexham duo could now leave

Smith and Rodriguez both look like shrewd signings but it does mean Wrexham now have seven strikers on their books.

Even with Parkinson starting two a game, seven is simply too many and two players will likely need to leave.

A loan move for Modou Faal seems very likely to happen as his game time was already limited before recent arrivals.

Meanwhile, given they are the most out of form centre-forwards at the club, one of Paul Mullin or Ollie Palmer will surely be sold.
