A Wrexham player has now left the club and co-owner Rob McElhenney has sent a message to him after the exit was confirmed.

Wrexham appear to be big fans of doing nothing on the transfer front all week and then saving everything for a Friday.

The same day last week saw Ryan Longman signed, while Jacob Mendy and Jack Marriott both extended their contracts.

Meanwhile, this week, Wrexham have completed a transfer for Sam Smith, who has joined in a club-record move worth at least seven figures.

When Smith was announced, a reliable journalist then reported that the Red Dragons are looking to loan Jay Rodriguez from Burnley for the rest of the campaign.

The news did not stop there, however, with a departure at the Racecourse Ground also sanctioned on January 31st.

Rob McElhenney sends James Jones message after Wrexham exit

It was announced on Friday that James Jones has left Wrexham to join Burton Albion were he will link up with ex-Red Dragons striker, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

Jones was labelled ‘sensational’ in 2024 but his game time during the current campaign has been very limited.

He has featured for just 26 minutes in League One, with the bulk of his playing time coming in the EFL Trophy.

After his exit was announced, Rob McElhenney took to X/Twitter to pen a touching message to the 28-year-old.

He wrote: ” I truly hate this part. James and his beautiful family are such a major part of our journey. They will be greatly missed.

“@burtonalbionfc you are getting a class player with a huge heart and wonderful family.”

Phil Parkinson speaks out after Wrexham let James Jones leave

The Scotsman joined the American-owned club in 2021 from Lincoln City for an undisclosed fee.

He made 126 appearances for Wrexham, scoring 14 goals, assisting two and playing a key role in the Welsh side earning back-to-back promotions.

On moving Jones on, Parkinson said: “We wish James all the best. He’s been with us right from the start of this journey and he’s really contributed over the last few years.

“We’ve lived through a lot with him, on and off the pitch. He’s a great lad and we wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
