Wrexham want to add creativity to their midfield this summer.

Wrexham are interested in Charlie Savage from former League One rivals Reading in their search to add goals and assists from deep.

Tom Lawrence is flattered by Wrexham’s interest after his departure from Rangers and could arrive at the Racecourse Ground on a free transfer.

Experts believe Lawrence would thrive in the Championship under Phil Parkinson and with noise growing around Wrexham’s interest in the 31-year-old, Wrexham Insider looks at the impact of his potential signing.

Winners from a Tom Lawrence transfer to Wrexham

Ryan Hardie

Wrexham signed Ryan Hardie as their first sign of ambition this summer to compete in the higher reaches of the Championship.

Hardie was excellent for Plymouth last season and did everything to avoid the drop with ten goals in the league.

Miron Muslic played Hardie as a number ten and Parkinson could be tempted to use the striker in a similar role that he tried with Jay Rodriguez last season.

However, should Lawrence arrive at the club, he would be vying for that position, leaving Hardie to partner Sam Smith up top in his favoured role.

Ollie Rathbone

Ollie Rathbone had an excellent debut season at Wrexham and was a major part of the club’s third successive promotion.

With energy and goals from midfield, the 28-year-old drove Parkinson’s side forward single-handedly at times and fans believe Wrexham picked up a bargain in Rathbone.

However, Rathbone is yet to set the world alight in the second tier and will be grateful of some support from Lawrence in controlling the game in the middle of the park.

It could be a fruitful partnership for the Red Dragons with Rathbone’s work rate and Lawrence’s guile, it is the perfect blend for Parkinson’s midfield.

Phil Parkinson

Parkinson was criticised at times during the last season for his cautious approach, particularly in his selection of George Dobson and Matty James in a midfield trio.

The addition of Lawrence would give the manager the option to use his experience in a number ten role, whilst still demanding defensive responsibilities.

It is unlikely that the manager will steer away from his trusted 3-5-2 formation but the profile of a player such as Lawrence allows for the Red Dragons to set up with more creative intent at times.

Losers from a Tom Lawrence transfer to Wrexham

Jay Rodriguez

Rodriguez wants another promotion with Wrexham next season but the arrival of Lawrence could pose a blow to his chances of regular first-team football.

Hardie’s arrival moves Rodriguez slightly down the pecking order in the striker position and having been used in a deeper role, Lawrence would take priority as the number ten.

Fans were unconvinced by Rodriguez at times last season and should the Wales international make the switch, he may have to settle for a role from the bench.

Steven Fletcher was used as an impact sub for much of his Wrexham career and Rodriguez could now be his replacement in that role.

Elliot Lee

Elliot Lee has been backed to leave Wrexham this summer and the arrival of an attacking midfielder with the pedigree of Lawrence would only push him closer towards the exit door.

Lee is a firm fan favourite having helped the club rise from the National League to the Championship but had a disrupted campaign in 2024-25, finding first-team opportunities more limited.

At 30 years of age, Lee will want to be playing regular football and would have many suitors in Leagues One or Two after a player with exceptional technical ability.
