Wrexham are rapidly developing their next Paul Mullin but there is one problem

More so than in any other window, the heart of Wrexham’s infamous promotion-winning team was ripped out this summer.

Wrexham’s success has been rapid, securing three promotions in four years under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

Their continued rise has, as expected, meant a large overturn of players during every summer transfer window.

However, what makes 2025 different is the fact that they lost some of their most beloved players.

Wrexham terminated Ollie Palmer’s contract so he could move to Swindon Town for free.

Elsewhere, while he remains under contract until 2027, Paul Mullin is spending 2025/26 on loan at Wigan Athletic.

Their exits in particular were big blows to the Wrexham fanbase, especially newer supporters who fell in love with the team via the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.

Welcome to Wrexham fans have lost their favourites

The documentary has given viewers a deep dive into the lives of many players.

This has allowed them to form strong emotional attachments to long-term stars like Mullin and Palmer.

We have seen the striking duo fire Wrexham all the way from the fifth tier of English football up to the Championship.

However, now they are gone, there are essentially no players left from the squad that ended the Dragons’ 15-year spell in the National League.

Elliot Lee is still on the Welsh outfit’s books but is not even making the matchday squad in the Championship anymore.

That leaves Max Cleworth as the only star who was at the club in 2022 who is still playing regularly.

In turn, Wrexham fans have been searching for their new hero who can get them up on their feet and cheering every time they get on the ball, just like Mullin used to do.

Issa Kabore is becoming a Wrexham fan favourite

On that front, Wrexham appear to have found their man in the form of Issa Kabore.

Kabore was not signed until deadline day and has only played four league games for the club, but he’s rapidly developing into that guy.

Every time the wing-back has possession you can hear the excitement from the Wrexham faithful. He has already earned his own song and is more than delivering on the pitch, notching three assists in just four games.

One journalist has even made comparisons between Mullin and Kabore when it comes to how excited supporters get by both players.

But there is a key problem facing the Red Dragons when it comes to the defender.

Can Wrexham sign Issa Kabore permanently

That problem is the fact that the 24-year-old is only at the Racecourse Ground for one season and will return to Manchester City after 2025/26 comes to a close.

We have already spoken to transfer expert Graeme Bailey about Wrexham signing Kabore permanently.

He said: “Issa Kabore has been outstanding for Wrexham, them getting him to drop into the Championship was a major coup and they are delighted with how it has gone. Clearly Wrexham would love to keep him, but nothing is decided yet.

“City are keeping tabs on him and will assess. Let’s not forget City are not blessed with many right-back options so could we see him get a chance? Unlikely, but let’s see how it goes in the coming months.”

Not being able to complete a permanent move for Kabore would be a big blow, given how rapidly Wrexham fans are falling in love with him.
