Wrexham are eyeing a striker in January and have looked at Ethan Wheatley of Manchester United.

The Red Dragons are in the market to strengthen their forward line this month following a poor first half of the season from the likes of Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer.

A whole host of names have been linked with a move to the Racecourse Ground, with Wrexham handed a Joe Gelhardt transfer boost this week.

Prior to the January transfer window getting underway, The Wrexham Insider learned that the Red Dragons were looking at Ethan Wheatley of Manchester United.

The young forward also had admirers at Stockport County, while the Red Devils had not decided at the time if they were going to let Wheatley go out on loan.

However, the Manchester outfit have already sanctioned one loan deal for another of their promising young attackers this season, which has now come to an end.

Wrexham could move for Joe Hugill after Wigan Athletic departure

Joe Hugill has a very impressive 31 goals and three assists for Man Utd’s U21 team.

The Durham-born star was sent out on loan to League One outfit Wigan Athletic for the 2024/25 season.

However, Wigan have now cancelled the 21-year-old’s deal and he’s returned to Manchester United.

Latics manager Shaun Maloney has now spoken out on why they sent Hugill back to Old Trafford, citing financial issues, as per Wigan Today.

He said: “It’s a budget-related decision really. I think he’s done really well here, I’ve really enjoyed working with Joe, and I think there’s even more development in Joe.

“So that’s the decision…it’s nothing to do with performance, or how we trained…we can only carry two ‘9s’ and that’s the decision.”

With Wrexham eyeing a striker and Hugill now proven at League One level, it would make sense for them to contact United and to try and get a loan deal done this month.

Joe Hugill League One stats vs Wrexham strikers

Hugill managed to make 18 appearances at Wigan before his loan was cancelled, scoring five and assisting one in all competitions.

In the league, meanwhile, the Englishman found the net on three occasions in 13 outings.

This is by no means a staggering record but it’s worth noting that his game time was reduced heavily in the last month and he was playing in a side who are currently 17th in the third tier.

Hugill is outperforming the majority of Wrexham’s fit strikers when it comes to goals per 90 this season, with superb sub Steven Fletcher the only player to have scored more.

So, if he were to start regularly in a much better team, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Man Utd gem start bagging goals in League One.
