Wrexham flop has done something remarkable in 250 minutes of football, Paul Mullin needs to take note

Wrexham are having a tough time at the top end of the pitch this season but one former flop is having no such issues.

Wrexham lost 3-2 versus Stevenage on Tuesday evening, seeing their chances of securing second place take a big hit.

For a change, it was the Red Dragons’ backline that was subpar in midweek with Arthur Okonkwo making two big errors and a number of defenders off their game.

These sorts of displays have been few and far between for Wrexahm this term, who still have one of the better defensive records in League One.

At the other end of the pitch, however, it has been a completely different story. Phil Parkinson earned the ire of fans when he decided to start Elliot Lee and Ollie Palmer up front against Stevenage.

Palmer has scored just three times this term and Lee, though a good midfielder, just doesn’t fit as a striker.

Meanwhile, even if he is awarded the goal which may have deflected off him following Ollie Rathbone’s shot, Paul Mullin’s goal return in 2024/25 is also dire.

Wrexham flop has outscored Paul Mullin in 250 minutes

Mullin, if you count the Stevenage effort, has found the back of the net just three times since returning to the third tier of English football.

This sees Wrexham lagging well behind second-place Wycombe Wanderers on the goal front in the current campaign.

Now, just to rub salt in the wounds, a striker who flopped at the Racecourse Ground is in sensational form for his new team.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson flopped at Wrexham after signing as a free agent in October following an injury to Jack Marriott.

He didn’t score a single goal in seven appearances across all competitions and, as a result, was released at the end of his contract earlier this month.

Bodvarsson has remained in League One though, and is now completely dominating with Burton Albion.

In his last three outings – totaling 250 minutes – the 32-year-old has found the back of the net a staggering four times.

That is already more League One goals than Mullin and Palmer have managed as regular features across the entire campaign to date, begging the question, what went wrong for Bodvarsson at Wrexham?

Wrexham striker signing update

There are now six days remaining of the 2025 winter transfer window, which ends of February 3rd.

Before the window began, it was reported that Wrexham want to sign a striker with Championship experience.

However, with less than a week to go, no new number nine appears anywhere close to arriving in Wales.

A deal for Michael Smith now looks unlikely and the club are in real danger of being forced to spend the rest of the campaign with their current, woeful options.
