With Wrexham searching for a new striker this month, it seems Michael Smith is the club’s top target, and there has been a big development in this transfer saga now.
Wrexham are struggling to match the prolificacy of previous seasons, with both Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin a shadow of their former selves in front of goal.
For the past couple of weeks, it has been heavily suggested that Michael Smith is an option for Wrexham, with a move expected for the Sheffield Wednesday forward.
While Wrexham and Sheffield Wednesday fans have conflicting views on Smith, it would seem the Red Dragons are pushing ahead with their interest. But, is a switch actually likely to happen now?
Wrexham have asked about Michael Smith, but Danny Rohl needs him
Before the weekend, Michael Smith had not played a single minute for the Owls across their last three games. He was on the bench again on Saturday, but entered the game in the second half and helped Wednesday to a 2-0 win with another goal to add to his tally this season.
One would assume that would be an issue for Wrexham’s hopes of landing Smith. But, the latest information from The Star suggests the Red Dragons have actually made an approach for Smith recently.
However, a deal is thought to be unlikely this month, given Smith’s importance to Sheffield Wednesday. He now has 12 goal contributions this season, at a rate of one return every 101 minutes.

Owls boss Danny Rohl has previously been coy about Smith’s situation, but after the win over QPR, the German coach clearly rates the striker’s influence in the team, even if he is seen as more of an impact substitute.
Rohl said: “We know what we get from Smith. Before the game I thought to myself how we could start this game and how we could end this game and at the end you look at it and maybe say that is exactly the story that I thought.
“To start with Smith and Paterson was not for me, I thought it was better to have one on the pitch and then bring the second in. This is the story of the game. But my team did everything.”
Wrexham could still sign Michael Smith for nothing in the summer
It is believed Sheffield Wednesday are looking for a new striker this month, but Smith sent a timely reminder to his club as to what he is capable of.
However, with his contract expiring at the end of the season and no sign of a renewal at this stage, Wrexham could be patient and snap him up for nothing in the summer if they are interested in using him longer-term.
It’s unclear whether Smith is actually what Wrexham need, though. As a stop-gap who can fire in the goals they need to get promoted, sure, Smith would be great for the Red Dragons. But, at 33-years-old, the striker would not exactly be an investment for the future.
So, with Wednesday now seemingly keen to keep hold of Smith, it may be best for Wrexham to cut their losses and look at other targets who may present better long-term value to the club.
