Wrexham have just been handed an unexpected boost over Wycombe Wanderers in League One promotion race

Wrexham are looking to make League One history this season, but Wycombe Wanderers are standing in their way.

They couldn’t, could they? Wrexham have already secured back-to-back promotions, a rarity for any side in the EFL.

But with just a month of the 2024/25 season left to play, there is a very real chance the Red Dragons become the first side to win three promotions in a row when starting in the National League or higher.

Right now, Wrexham are predicted to finish second in League One, but they are still under heavy pressure from Wycombe Wanderers.

Wycombe dropped points versus Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday, but unfortunately for Phil Parkinson, his side did the same against Cambridge United.

It leaves Wrexham three points above the Chairboys with a worse goal difference and a game less to play going into the weekend’s fixtures.

On paper, Wycombe have a tougher run than Wrexham coming up, as they face plenty of the teams currently eyeing a play-off place.

How Wrexham now have promotion advantage over Wycombe Wanderers

The Hollywood-owned team’s only really tough game, in theory anyway, takes place on April 26 against Chalrton Athletic.

Now, a decision involving that match could be set to hand Wrexham a big boost as they look to best Wycombe.

It was confirmed this week that the Red Dragons’ meeting with Charlton has now been moved to a 5:30pm kick-off.

It’s Wrexham’s penultimate game of 2024/25, and given how tight the battle for second is right now, it could be a promotion-deciding match.

On the same day, Wycombe take on Leyton Orient at 12:30pm, meaning Parkinson and co. will already know what they need to get out of their game later in the day.

This should hopefully give them a boost as they won’t be distracted by what is happening in their rival’s match, with the result already decided prior to a ball even being kicked at the Racecourse.

It should elivate some pressure and hopefully allow Wrexham to perform much better in what is their hardest game left in 2024/25.

Burton Albion ‘huge’ for Wrexham

Before turning their attention toward Charlton, however, Wrexham face Burton Albion on Saturday.

The Brewers are down at the bottom end of the division but Parkinson still thinks it’s a ‘huge’ game, as per Leader Live.

He said: “It’s an early kick-off and we have got to make sure that the supporters are ready and the team is ready.

“Make sure that we are all ready and focused from the first whistle.

“It is obviously a huge game for the football club and a huge game for Burton as well.

“It is that stage of the season where everyone talks about every game being like a cup final feel to it and we have got to really crank it up at the weekend in terms of the atmosphere and the intensity of our play.”
