Wrexham loanee scores great goal in man of the match display, but it won’t change Phil Parkinson’s mind

While Wrexham find it difficult to add players to their squad this month, one player they sent out on loan has just enjoyed a successful weekend.

Try as they might, Wrexham’s pursuit of new players in the January transfer window has been a fruitless one so far.

There is very little to report when it comes to Wrexham’s confirmed transfers in the New Year, but Phil Parkinson does have progress updates on some of his squad players out on loan this season.

Most notably, one Wrexham outcast managed to get himself on the scoresheet over the weekend, but it is likely not enough to get Parkinson to reconsider his thoughts on the player’s future.

Jordan Davies scores for Grimsby Town as play-offs beckon

Despite being a key part of Wrexham’s promotion from the National League and featuring heavily in League Two last season, Jordan Davies was shipped out on loan to Grimsby Town in the summer.

After scoring a brace in his third game for the League Two outfit, the future looked bright for Davies, but a hamstring injury in the next game derailed his season entirely.

Davies missed 16 games as a result, but has been back in action since mid-November, and he has now managed to notch his fourth goal of the campaign.

The 26-year-old gave Grimsby the lead in the 17th minute against Chesterfield Town on Saturday afternoon with a neat, opportunistic finish against the run of play. Unfortunately for Davies, his goal was cancelled out 17 minutes later, and the sides shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

There’s no place for Jordan Davies at Wrexham

Obviously, whenever a loan play does well, there is debate as to whether they should return to their parent club and try again.

But, Parkinson recently insisted Davies will stay at Grimsby for the season, suggesting it is the best place for him and highlighting the injury he sustained as a big setback to his progress.

It is very hard to imagine Davies having a future in the Wrexham squad, with his contract at the Racecourse Ground coming to an end in the summer.

Davies’ departure would be a shame, as he is one of the last-remaining survivors from when Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over in 2020. But, the club must evolve, and as sad as it is, Davies simply isn’t at the quality required by the Red Dragons, especially if they are to push on and compete in the Championship.
