A call made by Phil Parkinson this week could cast the future of one Wrexham star into doubt.

Wrexham made nine signings in the 2024 summer transfer window and has since brought another three players to the Racecourse Ground on free transfers.

Matty James arrived to cover George Evans in midfield, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson was signed following a long-term injury to Jack Marriott and Brad Foster came in amid the club’s ongoing goalkeeper crisis.

Foster impressed on his Wrexham debut in the EFL Trophy versus Crewe Alexandra, while Bodvarsson hasn’t been in a League One matchday squad for five games now.

However, of the trio, it is midfielder James who has shone the most since joining for free in October.

After cementing himself as a regular starter under Phil Parkinson, Wrexham gave Matty James a new contract on Thursday.

The 33-year-old will now spend the rest of the 2024/25 campaign in Wales, which could impact the future of one other Red Dragons ace.

Wrexham’s Matty James contract decision could see Jordan Davies sold

With James now tied down, Parkinson currently has the former Manchester United man, George Dobson, Andy Cannon, Elliot Lee, Ollie Rathbone and Josh Adam as fit midfield options.

Evans will return for Wrexham this month as well, while James Jones is another option once he recovers from his injury picked up against Crewe.

In turn, the Red Dragons now have one of the most well-stocked midfield departments in League One, leaving little room for one of their loan stars.

Jordan Davies has played 139 games for the Welsh outfit in total but the decision was made to send him out on loan to Grimsby Town this season.

Despite some injury problems, the midfielder has scored a very impressive three goals in eight league matches this term – more than Paul Mullin and the same as Ollie Palmer.

However, with so many midfield options already at the Racecourse, Davies could be recalled and then sold in January.

Phil Parkinson provides update on Wrexham loan players

Davies is not the only player out on loan from the Red Dragons right now, with the likes of Sam Dalby and Billy Waters also excelling for their new clubs.

With the January transfer window less than two weeks away, Wrexham are expected to make calls on all of these players.

Parkinson revealed a chat with Wrexham chief Shaun Harvey this week, in which he discussed the future of the club’s loan stars.

He said: “There’s an option to call all the loan players back in January. As you can imagine there’s a lot going on at the moment with decisions on those players.

“I had a chat on Monday night with Shaun Harvey, Michael Williamson, Les Reed and Humphrey Ker about where we’re going with the loan players.”
