Wrexham may have just been given green light to sign ‘strong’ player Phil Parkinson wanted in summer

Wrexham tried and failed to sign several players during the 2024 summer transfer window.

Ahead of their first season in League One since it was rebranded, Wrexham were not shy about splashing the cash.

The American-owned club broke their transfer record twice in the month of August – first for Ollie Rathbone and then Modou Faal.

However, when it came to landing a striker, the Red Dragons really struggled before eventually pushing through a deal for Faal on the last day of the window.

Wrexham looked at signing Will Lankshear on loan from Tottenham Hotspur but no move came to pass – though the striker’s future in north London is once again up in the air.

Bailey Cadamarteri was linked to the Red Dragons as well but he ended up joining Lincoln City on loan from Sheffield Wednesday.

Cadamarteri was not the only Wednesday player of interest to Phil Parkinson and co. over the summer, however.

Door could now be open for Wrexham to sign Michael Smith

It was claimed in mid-August that Wrexham were the ‘most likely destination’ for Michael Smith.

However, the veteran centre-forward remainder at the Owls for the first half of 2024/25.

The reason Wrexham target Smith couldn’t leave Sheffield Wednesday was then revealed in November 2024, with Danny Rohl not looking to loan him at the time.

Reports this week, as per Football Insider, have now claimed that Wednesday have submitted an offer for striker Thomas Waddingham.

Should a deal be completed this month, Rohl may be more open to allowing Smith to depart Hillsborough.

And with Wrexham still in the market for a striker this month, a move for the Wednesday man makes perfect sense.

How Michael Smith compares to Wrexham strikers

Smith has been dubbed ‘strong’ previously and continues to impress in the Championship despite now being 33 years of age.

He’s an excellent target man and could replace Ollie Palmer in the starting eleven amid his struggles for goals.

Smith, of course, wouldn’t be a long-term solution but a loan in the second half of this campaign would be perfect and Wednesday’s striker activity should make the move a lot more likely than it was a few months ago.
