Wrexham must smash their transfer record for Premier League star Fabrizio Romano says could leave

Wrexham now know that a native of the town could leave his current side this summer, and they should be looking to make an offer.

Wrexham are gearing up for their first-ever season in the Championship since the competition was rebranded.

£40m could be available to spend, with the club’s recent financial success putting them in a great position when it comes to PSR.

Wrexham have been told to make six to nine signings this summer, with Rob McElhenney hinting at another promotion push after playing down the idea of ‘consolidation’.

But if they are to compete at the top end of the Championship, it seems clear that improvements to Wrexham’s squad need to be made.

Wrexham-born Harry Wilson could leave Fulham

As has been the case every year since the takeover, Wrexham look to be eyeing moves for players in higher divisions.

And while not officially linked, it would make a lot of sense if the Welsh outfit pursued a deal for Harry Wilson.

Wrexham were linked with one Fulham player this month already, and Wilson’s future in London is in doubt.

Fabrizio Romano has reported this week that the Cottagers have triggered an extension in the forward’s contract. However, he will now either sign a new deal or will leave the club this summer.

Why Wrexham should target Harry Wilson

As Wrexham continue their rise up the EFL ladder, the quality of player they must bring in is increasing.

We have seen this when looking at the club’s wages compared to Championship sides, who have vastly outspent the North American-backed club.

So, if Rob and Ryan Reynolds want to compete and eventually reach the Premier League, which they have made clear they do, then they’re going to have to start spending more on big players.

Born in Wrexham, Wilson is a Wales international, and it would be fantastic to see a local lad back home and in the national team at the same time.

He has a plethora of experience in both the Premier League and Championship, with his second-tier record particularly impressive.

Moreover, Wilson is a versatile forward who can operate on either flank and as an attacking midfielder.

Wrexham don’t play out-and-out wingers, but as Ryan Longman has shown since his January switch, wide players who are traditionally more attack-minded can excel as wing-backs in Parkinson’s system.

Even with just 12 months left on his deal, Wilson would no doubt command a sizeable transfer fee. But if Wrexham want to play with the big boys in the Championship, fans will have to quickly get used to their side spending much bigger sums.

Sam Smith is Wrexham’s current record signing, joining for £2m from Reading in January – a fairly small fee compared to what teams in the Championship spend every season.
