Wrexham have one of the strongest squads in League One but it could come back to bite Phil Parkinson.
The Red Dragons have recruited well in the last two transfer windows and utilised the free-agent market to great success.
Matty James has earned himself a contract and cemented himself as a regular starter under Phil Parkinson following his arrival in October.
In the 2025 winter transfer window, meanwhile, Parkinson was able to add three more players to Wrexham’s first-team squad.
Ryan Longman, Sam Smith, and Jay Rodriguez were all signed for big money as the Welsh outfit look to continue their promotion charge.
The arrivals of Smith and Rodriguez mean Paul Mullin may struggle for minutes at Wrexham going forward, as could Ollie Palmer and Modou Faal.
But while centre-forward is something of a problem area given the sheer number of players, Parkinson must manage another position carefully.
George Evans is giving Phil Parkinson a problem
George Evans joined Wrexham from Championship outfit Millwall in the 2023 summer transfer window.
During his debut campaign at the Racecourse Ground, he made 35 appearances and provided two assists.
He was a key part of a three-man midfield that won promotion out of League Two before losing his place in 2024/25, in part due to injury but also new signings.
Given his lack of minutes, it seemed the 30-year-old’s stint in Wales was coming to an end, with a potential January or summer exit on the cards in 2025.
However, he stayed put in the winter window and has recently recaptured some of his best form.
Evans shone versus Bolton Wanderers earlier this week, providing the assist for Andy Cannon’s winning goal.
The Englishman clearly deserves a chance to prove himself in League One after recent EFL Trophy displays, but Parkinson will have a hard time fitting him in.
What is Wrexham’s best midfield three
Currently, Evans, James, Cannon, Ollie Rathbone, George Dobson, and Elliot Lee are all battling it out for just three starting berths.
Lee has recently been deployed as a striker but now that experiment appears to be over following the arrivals of Smith and Rodriguez, he’s likely to start most games in his favoured role.
Rathbone has been immense for Wrexham and should not be dropped but every player named above has shown patches of quality during 2024/25.
Most fans probably believe Dobson and James don’t work well together so at present, it seems like a trio of Lee, Rathbone, and one of the aforementioned duo is their strongest starting midfield.
That does mean fewer minutes for Cannon and Evans despite recent displays but with two games a week coming up for the foreseeable, both should get some chances to stake a claim to become a regular starter.
